SAN ANTONIO – Oklahoma men's golf overcame a deficit to run away with the team title at the second annual Valero Texas Collegiate at TPC San Antonio on Monday.
The eighth-ranked Sooners (1, -30) trailed No. 10 Ole Miss by a stroke entering the final round but took the lead on the third hole with a
Drew Goodman birdie and never looked back, winning by six strokes to notch
Ryan Hybl's 45th career win, extending the 16th year head coach's school record for career victories.
"It's been an incredible week for our team on a PGA Tour-level course," Hybl said. "The guys were absolute warriors from the start. We kicked things off with (Jase) Summy's 62, and then
PJ Maybank III's 66 yesterday kept us right in the mix. Today, having all five guys step up and perform was huge — that's exactly what we want from this team. We made a ton of birdies, but what stood out even more was how they fought through adversity. That's what Oklahoma golfers do…they make the most of every round, no matter the obstacles."
Jase Summy (3, -11) and
Drew Goodman (T8, -5) led the Sooners as the preseason All-Americans finished inside the top 10. Two more Oklahoma golfers,
Matthew Troutman and
PJ Maybank III, finished tied for 19th.
The Sooners have now won at least one event in all 16 seasons under Hybl, whose 45 wins are the 13th most in NCAA history and fourth among active Division I coaches. Since the beginning of the 2021-22 season, Oklahoma has 16 stroke play victories, tied with Auburn for the most among all SEC teams. Additionally, the victory marked the 15th consecutive full semester that OU has won an event — the longest streak in program history.
"This is a big-time win for us against a top-tier field," Hybl added. "It's a huge confidence boost as we head into the heart of our fall schedule. We're going to enjoy this one, but we know there's another big challenge waiting for us next week at Colonial."
Summy was sensational for Hybl's team all week, and his stretch of five consecutive birdies in the final round pushed OU past the field for good on Monday. After signing for a school record 10-under par in the opening round, the Keller, Texas, product was equally as impressive over his final 13 holes at the par-72 track. After opening with a bogey and a double-bogey on No. 6, the junior rattled off five straight birdies starting on the sixth hole. A final birdie on the 17th got him to 11-under for the week and solo third.
Goodman posted rounds of 67-74-70 to finish tied for eighth at 5-under par, securing his second straight top-10 finish to open the year. The Norman product has amassed a team-high 15 top-10 finishes and 26 top-20s in 40 career events.
After carding a 77 in the opening round on Saturday, sophomore
PJ Maybank III (T19, -2) gave OU back-to-back counting scores, recording a 66-71 to close the week and share 19th with teammate
Matthew Troutman.
Troutman (T19, -2) used rounds of 69-72-73 to finish tied for 19th. The Louisville, Kentucky, native finished T18 at the season-opening Inverness Collegiate and has now finished inside the top 20 in three of his four college starts.
Despite a T51 finish, sophomore
Ryder Cowan (T51, +3) gave Oklahoma a critical counting score of 70 (-2) in Monday's final round, helping the Sooners into the winner's circle.
Freshman
Clark Van Gaalen (+7) played unattached, finishing in a tie for 65th.
As a team, Oklahoma posted a field-high 63 birdies and finished in the top five in scoring on par-3, par-4 and par-5 scoring. Summy finished second among all players with 19 birdies, while Maybank III's two eagles led the field.
Oklahoma returns to the course Sept. 30 at the Ben Hogan Collegiate which is hosted at historic Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas.
