NORMAN – Oklahoma men's golf secured third place at the Stephens Cup on Wednesday, defeating San Diego State 3.5-1.5 in the bronze medal match.

Dominant performances by Ryder Cowan and PJ Maybank III powered the Sooners past the Aztecs, while Drew Goodman and Jase Summy delivered the clinching points.

After finishing fourth in stroke play to earn the No. 4 seed, OU came out strong in the match play round. The Sooners jumped out to a 3.5-1.5 lead thru 4-7, with sophomores Maybank III and Cowan building commanding advantages in their matches. Maybank's and Cowan's eventual wins put Oklahoma up 2-0, while Summy secured half a point to ensure at least a draw. Goodman delivered the winning point, closing the match and securing the Sooners' 3.5-1.5 victory with a +11 hole differential as a team.

Maybank III struck first for OU, dominating Harry Takis 5&4. After trailing 2-down thru four, the sophomore from Cheboygan, Mich., won four consecutive holes to turn the tide, finishing the victory on the 14th.

Cowan followed up with a 6&5 rout of Shea Lague, marking the most decisive match of the day on either the men's or women's side. The Edmond native won seven holes and dropped only one, pushing his career match-play record to an unbeaten 5-0-1.

In a tight contest, Summy held an early 1-up lead before SDSU's Chanachon Chokprajakchat took an advantage he held for most of the match. But on the 18th and final hole, Summy's par and Chokprajakchat's bogey flipped the match to all square, giving the Sooners the crucial half point to ensure at least a tie.

Matthew Troutman battled in a close match, ultimately falling 2-down to Tyler Kowack, giving SDSU its only full point.

Shortly after Troutman's defeat, preseason All-American Drew Goodman wrapped up the win for Oklahoma with a 2&1 victory over Justin Hastings, leading wire-to-wire and improving his career match-play record to 10-8-1.

The Sooners now boast a 20-7-1 record in match play over the last five years, including a 5-1 mark since last season.

Head coach Ryan Hybl, announced Tuesday as an inductee into the Golf Coaches Association of America Hall of Fame, will lead his team next at the Ka'anapali Classic from Nov. 2-4, where OU looks to win for the third straight year.
