DENTON, Texas – The University of Oklahoma soccer team opened its 2024 campaign with a 1-0 road result over North Texas on Thursday evening in Denton.
Oklahoma (1-0-0) scored its lone goal in the 28th minute on a terrific effort play by junior forward
Morganne Eikelbarner, handing UNT (0-1-0) its first season-opening loss since the 2005 season.
"We played really hard against a great opponent," said OU head coach
Matt Mott, "We fought for 90 minutes. We had a few too many fouls, we were maybe a little too anxious, but I'm happy with the team performance."
The season-opening win also marks the University of Oklahoma's first regular-season victory, in any sport, as a member of the Southeastern Conference.
On a night that saw the Sooner defense win numerous aerial battles and challenge the Mean Green attack with skillful tackling, Eikelbarner fittingly generated the OU marker with a terrific defensive play. The junior identified a strong angle to cut off a UNT defender possessing the ball just inside the box, raced to the spot and won the ball. She took three strong steps towards the frame and launched a powerful right-footed shot past the keeper, recording her sixth collegiate goal.
"She read it great," continued Mott, "She steals a lot of possessions by reading the play really well, picked it off and made a really good finish. That's her. She can score. When she gets a chance in and around the box, she's dangerous. It was a great goal, and one when we really needed it."
The clean sheet is Oklahoma's ninth season-opening shutout in program history. Sooner goalkeeper
Caroline Duffy made four saves to register her second collegiate clean sheet while making her OU debut, directing the back line to a terrific performance.
OU limited North Texas to just six shots and shut down each of its opponent's corner kick opportunities. The Sooner defense was well-organized and competitive throughout the evening, generating plenty of opportunities for the counterattack as OU led 10-6 on shots. Oklahoma's back line of
Cailey England,
Andie Wolfe,
Meredith King and
Cassie Clifton each played the full 90.
"The toughness stood out," Mott concluded, "We won so many aerial battles. North Texas is really good in the air, we had to be tough, and I thought we did that. The back line was really good. I'm happy with the midfield play. We didn't give them a lot of looks, and that's certainly what we want against a quality opponent like that."
Abigail McNulty and
Morgan O'Connor each put a shot on frame in the attacking third.
The Sooner win over UNT also came on a night the Mean Green set a new program record for its largest home attendance.
