NORMAN – Graduate forward
Leonie Weber scored both goals as the University of Oklahoma soccer team opened its 2024 home schedule with a 2-1 win over FIU on Sunday evening in Norman.
Weber's brace was the 52nd in Oklahoma (2-0) program history and marked the second of her career. OU led 14-6 on shots and placed five of their attempts on frame, limiting the Panthers (1-1) to just six shots.
"What a college soccer game," said OU head coach
Matt Mott, "I give FIU a ton of credit for coming in here and fighting hard and creating a couple of really good chances. I was really happy with our defense. To go up 1-0, I thought we were in a good spot, and then to get another one back with a goal after they score. It's a 90-minute game. A great response from us."
The Sooners' attacking effort was bolstered by an FIU red card just inside the 40th minute. Oklahoma earned a 7-2 advantage on corner kicks playing up an outfielder in the second half, creating excellent offensive opportunities in the box.
A hotly-contested second half followed a scoreless first 45 minutes as FIU aggressively challenged OU's attack. Weber's first goal was a product of a terrific second effort from junior midfielder
Alexis Washington late in the 77th minute. Washington won the ball on the goal line just to the right of the net and sent a pass towards the center of the goal area. The pass deflected off graduate forward
Sophia Green right to an uncovered Weber, who promptly launched home her 13th career goal.
FIU answered on a penalty kick three minutes later, knotting the match at 1-1. Weber played hero six minutes later, placing a free kick from just outside the box perfectly into the top right corner of the goal over the outstretched arm of the FIU keeper.
"Leo had a couple of really good looks in the first half," Mott continued, "She's dangerous. Great with free kicks obviously, she's dangerous in and around the box. We were on them there in the second half, creating some stuff but just not putting it away. I'm certainly happy with the way we battled tonight."
Junior keeper
Caroline Duffy improved to 2-0-0 on the season with a four save effort.
Hadley Murrell led OU with four shots while Weber and
Abigail McNulty each provided three.
Sunday's win came in front of an attendance of 901 fans.
"Sooner Nation is just the best," Mott concluded, "To come out on a hot, late Sunday night to support us was really appreciated."
Washington's assist moved her into a tie for second all-time in OU history with the 15th of her career, three shy of Lauren MacIver's program record. Green's assist marked the first of her Oklahoma career and gave her career point No. 60.
