Twenty-One Sooners Slated for T&F Olympic Trials

NORMAN  – Twenty-one current and former Oklahoma track and field student-athletes are set to compete in their respective nation's Olympic trials over the next two weeks, vying for a position at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games from July 26 to August 11.
 
Ten Sooners from the United States will compete at the USA Track & Field Olympic Trials from June 21-30 in Eugene, Ore. Three athletes from Canada will race from June 27-30 in Montreal and three more will participate in Great Britain's trials from June 29-30 in Manchester. Student-athletes from Sweden, Estonia, Czech Republic and Italy will close out trials from June 28-30.
 
Current Sooner and outdoor school record holder, Kassidy Gallagher, will kick off  U.S. trials Friday in the women's hammer throw. Alumna Kennedy Blackmon, school record holder and the 2023 NCAA Outdoor Championships runner-up, will race in the first round of the women's 100-meter dash that night.
 
If qualified, Gallagher and Blackmon will compete on Saturday and Sunday in finals rounds to secure their spot in Paris.
 
Paige Low, school record holder and 2024 NCAA Indoor All-American, will contest in the women's discus throw qualifying round Monday, June 24.
 
The Sooners will take a three-day break before resuming U.S. and international trials on Thursday, June 27. On the women's side, 2018 graduate and two-time All-American Leya Buchanan will race at Canada's trials in the women's 100m qualifying round. U.S. trials continue with the women's discus final, if qualified, Paige Low will take the field that evening where three Sooner men will also compete in their qualifying rounds.
 
Vernon Turner, 2022 NCAA indoor national champion and 2023 graduate will compete in the high jump at his second Olympic Trials. Current Sooner Brendon See will take on the discus throw as a rising sophomore and 2023 graduate and four-time All-American Demarius Smith will race in the 200-meter dash.
 
Canada kicks off trials for the Sooners on Friday, June 28. Redshirt senior Nicholas Young will race in the men's 1,500m qualifying round, rising senior Jenna James takes a lane in the women's 400-meter hurdles and if qualified, Leya Buchanan will compete in the semifinal and final rounds of the 100m.
 
Two Sooner women, alumna Kenzie Buekes and rising senior Olivia Lueking, look for final-qualifying performances in the pole vault at U.S. trials Friday. Buekes is a 2019 graduate, she earned a First Team All-American honor for the Sooners at the 2016 NCAA Indoor Championships and was the program's indoor and outdoor school record holder for four years. Lueking returns to Eugene after posting a First Team All-American performance at the NCAA Outdoor Championships earlier this month.
 
Rising junior BJ Green will take on the triple jump field that evening after a remarkable sophomore season, earning two First Team All-America honors and sweeping the indoor and outdoor Big 12 titles.
 
Sooner alumna and seven-time First Team All-American Jessica Woodard continues her professional campaign in the women's shot put Friday night.
 
If qualified, Demarius Smith will close out events for the Sooners in the men's 200m semifinal race Friday night.
 
From Friday, June 28 to Sunday, June 29 Filippa Miller will compete in the pole vault for her home nation, Sweden. Pippi Lotta Enok will also participate in the heptathlon at Estonian trials on the 28th and 29th. Eva Kubickova will run in the 100-meter dash at Czech trials and Amanda Obijiaku will race for Italy in the 100 and 200-meter dash.
 
On Saturday, June 29, events will begin in Manchester for the British Sooners. School record-holder and four-time All-American alumna Ama Pipi will race in the women's 400m that morning.
 
Canada trials continue for Leya Buchanan with the women's 200m qualifying race. Rising senior Jenna James will also look to qualify for final rounds in the women's 400-meter hurdles that evening. If qualified, Nicholas Young will race in the men's 1,500m semifinal at 6:30 p.m. CT.
 
At U.S. Trials, final events for Brendon See, Jessica Woodard and Demarius Smith will take place in Eugene from 6:30 p.m. CT to 8:49 p.m. CT.
 
Sunday, June 30 marks the end of trials for the T&F Sooners. Final events for Bayley Campbell in the hammer throw and Ama Pipi in the 400m will take place early in the morning in Manchester for Great Britain Trials. Current Sooner Ralford Mullings and three-time All-American Nikaoli Williams will compete in Jamaica Trials starting at 5:30 p.m. CT.
 
If qualified, Leya Buchanan and Nicholas Young will compete in semifinal and final races for Canada. Olivia Lueking, Kenzie Buekes, BJ Green and Vernon Turner will close out U.S. Trials in the final rounds their respective events, if qualified.
