FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The University of Oklahoma men's track and field team wrapped up the NCAA West Prelims Friday night. Freshman
Kyren Washington qualified in the high jump and sophomore
BJ Green qualified in the triple jump for the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Ore., June 5-8.
Washington cleared five heights before approaching his qualifying mark of 2.20m (7'2.50"), and leaped over the bar on his first attempt for fifth place. The freshman tied the third-best jump in Oklahoma outdoor history to secure his spot on the national stage. On his first attempt, Green registered 16.23m (53'3") and cruised through his remaining jumps with ease. He placed second overall to clinch his spot at the national meet.
"Kyren did an incredible job stepping up and performing in one of the toughest preliminary championships I can remember in my career," praised head coach James Thomas. "Matching a personal best, then setting two new personal bests on the following bars is outstanding. I'm extremely proud of this freshman."
Green returns to NCAAs for a second time while Washington will make his championship debut.
Freshman Dominic Serem finalized his first collegiate season with a 14th-place finish (3:41.69) in the 1,500-meter run, only two spots out from qualification.
The women's squad returns to the track on Saturday for the final day of west preliminaries. The Sooners will compete in the discus, 4x100 and 4x400 relays and the triple jump.
