T&F Add Three Entries to NCAA Championships

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark.  – The University of Oklahoma women's track and field team concluded the first rounds of the NCAA West Prelims on Thursday. Jasmine Akins (long jump), Olivia Lueking (pole vault) and Tuane Silver (shot put) qualified for the championships after finishing in the top-12 of their respective events.
 
Akins posted an all-conditions personal record of 6.57m (21'6.75") (+3.7) for eighth place. Lueking cleared 4.30m (14'1.25") for one of the top marks in her field and Silver registered a career-best 17.11m (56'1.75") toss for 11th.
 
Lueking cruised to her top-12 height, clearing each of her three attempts without fail. By qualifying, she has now made six straight indoor and outdoor national championship appearances.

Associate coach for vertical jumps, Jerel Langley, spoke on Lueking's performance, "She did a great job today executing and getting the job done. We got to learn something that will help build some confidence for the final site, she's in a great spot moving forward."

Silver entered the preliminary events ranked 21st in the west region, jumping 10 spots to secure her spot at nationals. She also improved her position on OU's all-time outdoor list, moving up from No. 9 to No. 6.

"Tuane did an amazing job executing her throw. She got amassive personal records and secured her first trip to the NCAA Championships as a freshman," stated assistant coach for throw, Andrew Ninow. "I'm very excited for her to build off this performance and compete in Eugene in two weeks."
 
Akins stood in 14th place going into her third and final jump after recording 6.45m on her first attempt and fouling her second. She stepped up to the challenge, using a wind-aided leap to register the qualifying mark that boosted her to eighth place.
 
"Jasmine maintained her composure under pressure and produced the best jump of her career," said assistant coach for horizontal jumps, Austin Davis. "Those are the qualities of a champion."
  
Adding to the career day for the Sooners, Jayda Gibson grabbed a personal best in the 400-meter dash, clocking 53.26 for the eighth-best finish in Oklahoma outdoor history.
 
Due to the potential for inclement weather, the NCAA announced a schedule change for Friday. All running events are moved up two hours and field events three hours.
