FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The University of Oklahoma men's track and field team continued its postseason campaign at NCAA West Prelims on Wednesday.
Nikaoli Williams and
Anthony Riley (long jump),
Diego Trevino (shot put) and
Bayley Campbell (hammer throw) clinched spots at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Ore., June 5-8.
The long jump duo boasted career-best performances. Williams recorded a leap of 7.99m (26'2.75") for third, and Riley registered 7.81m (25'7.50") for sixth place to qualify. Trevino needed only one toss to punch his ticket to the championships, registering 19.13m (62'9.25") on his first attempt.
Bayley Campbell competed late into the night, securing ninth in the hammer throw with a 66.97m (219'8") mark.
"I was happy to see these guys show up and compete at a high level tonight," praised assistant coach for horizontal jumps, Austin Davis. "Both jumpers kept their composure and had lifetime-best performances. I couldn't be prouder as a coach."
The long jump crew also brought significant changes to OU's all-time outdoor performance list. Williams improved his position at No. 3 and Riley climbed to sixth in Oklahoma history with their respective marks.
Freshman Dominic Serem automatically qualified for the 1,500m quarterfinal after finishing third in his heat, clocking in at 3:42.83. Serem will race at 5:15 p.m. on Friday for a chance to earn a lane in Eugene.
School record-holder
Thobias Cheruiyot narrowly missed qualification for the NCAA Outdoor Championships in the 10,000-meter run. He finished one spot out in 13th place with a time of 29:01.29.
Due to the potential of severe weather late Thursday evening, the NCAA moved field events up 1.5 hours and running events up three hours. Day two will open with the women's hammer throw at 8:30 a.m. and the 100-meter hurdles at 3 p.m.
