WACO, Texas – The University of Oklahoma track and field team concluded their final Big 12 Outdoor Championship Saturday night, held at the Clyde Hart Track and Field Stadium. Sophomore
BJ Green claimed the triple jump title while nine more Sooners added scores to the men's and women's team count.
Green was named the Big 12 triple jump champion after recording a 16.52m (54'2.50") mark. He becomes the fourth Sooner in Oklahoma history to sweep the men's indoor and outdoor triple jump titles in one season.
Green registered 15.88m and 15.66m on his first and second attempts, then grabbed his winning mark on his third jump. After a brief weather delay before finals, Green returned to the pit but claimed no distance on his final attempts. His closest competitor, Kelsey Daniel of Texas, trailed half a meter behind in second place. Green's first-place finish awarded 10 points to the men's team score.
"I'm proud of BJ's consistency and growth this year," stated assistant coach for horizontal jumps, Austin Davis. "Today he took control of the competition and kept his composure throughout all of it."
Ten Sooners scored in eight events on the final day of the championship to claim All Big-12 honors.
"I couldn't be more pleased with the way these men and women came out and competed these last three days," praised head coach James Thomas. "They faced multiple weather delays and 16-hour days. They left with numerous personal bests, All-Big 12 honors and a lasting impression on our final meet in the conference. I am incredibly proud of every one of them."
Back-to-back Big 12 outdoor pole vault champion,
Olivia Lueking, cleared 4.41m (14'5.50") for second place and added eight points to the women's score.
Senior
Richard Johnson used a late kick at the last 100 meters to clock a season-best time of 45.45 in the men's 400m for a silver medal.
"I was very impressed by how Richard came out and battled today," said assistant coach for sprints and hurdles, Mookie Salaam. "If he made a move earlier, he would be crowned conference champ. It goes to show the talent he has. I'm proud of him for coming out here and leaving it all on the track."
In the women's triple jump,
Agur Dwol leaped to a career-high 13.00m (42'8") for sixth place and the sixth-best jump in Oklahoma outdoor history.
Jasmine Akins also scored, finishing in eighth with a 12.65m (41'6") mark.
Competing in his first outdoor Big 12 Championship, freshman
