Cowan, Campbell Jr. Finish in Top 10 at Augusta

April 07, 2024 | Men's Golf

AUGUSTA, Ga. – A pair of top-10 finishes from Ryder Cowan and Stephen Campbell Jr. powered No. 14 Oklahoma to a sixth-place finish at the Augusta Invitational on Sunday.

The Sooners (T6, -6) carded the fourth-lowest final-round score to make up ground on the leaderboard, but they couldn't break into the top five at the par-72 Forest Hills Golf Club.

Top-ranked North Carolina won the event by six strokes, finishing at 21-under for the week to hold off Texas and Oklahoma State, who finished second and third. Mercer's Tobias Jonsson claimed medalist honors to earn a PGA Tour exemption.

Cowan (T10, -3) fired a 1-under 71 on Sunday afternoon to finish in a tie for 10th and post his second top-10 finish in three events as the freshman finished fifth at last month's Pauma Valley Invite. The Edmond, Okla., product's day featured four birdies and an eagle on the 601-yard, par-5 11th hole.

Campbell Jr. (T10, -3) shared 10th with Cowan on the leaderboard after signing for a 2-under 70 in the final round. The junior sat at 1-over par on the week thru seven holes on Sunday, but played his final 11 holes without a bogey paired with four birdies to get into the red and notch his third top 10 over his last four tournaments.

Ben Lorenz (T20, E) posted his third top-20 finish of the spring by tallying a 3-under 69 Sunday to finish at even par. The Peoria, Ariz, product led the field with 38 pars on the week.

Luke Kluver (T25, +1) rallied for 36 pars at the event to finish 25th.

Drew Goodman (T37, +3) finished in a tie for 37th after scoring a 71 (-1) in the final round.

As a team, Oklahoma has now finished under par in all nine stroke-play events this season and at 17 of their last 18 tournaments dating back to last season, with the only exception being the 2023 NCAA Championships at Grayhawk GC. However, the Sooners' sixth-place finish snapped the team's streak of top-fives at nine tournaments.

The Sooners close the regular season next weekend at The Thunderbird, held annually at Papago Golf Club in Phoenix. OU tees off on Friday morning in the two-day, 54-hole tournament, where it'll go for a final tune-up before the Big 12 Championship on April 22-24.
