Cowan Finishes Fourth, OU Second at Big 12 Championship
April 24, 2024 | Men's Golf
TRINITY, Texas – Oklahoma posted the second-lowest round of the day for the second consecutive round but couldn't catch Texas as the Sooners finished second at the 2024 Big 12 Men's Golf Championship on Wednesday.
The Sooners (2, -7) posted a 283 (-5) in the final round at Whispering Pines Golf Club but couldn't erase Texas' 11-shot lead as the Longhorns claimed the team title by 18 shots. True freshman Ryder Cowan finished tied for fourth and earned a spot on the Big 12 All-Tournament Team.
"I'm proud of how our guys fought down the stretch here," head coach Ryan Hybl said. "I thought that Ryder showed how special he is this week. Even though it's not surprising to us, to do what he did is just really special."
The Sooners opened with a trio of birdies early in the round, but Texas (1, -25) never let Crimson and Cream within striking distance on the final day. OU trailed Oklahoma State late in the round for second, but Cowan strung together four straight birdies to push OU in front of its in-state foe at the finish line.
Cowan's fourth-place finish was his best of the season as the freshman posted two rounds in the 60s at Whispering Pines. His final-round score of 68 (-4) was OU's low round on Wednesday.
Jase Summy (11, -3) carded a 2-under 70 in the final round to continue his rise up the leaderboard. He narrowly missed a long birdie putt on the 18th that would've placed him on the All-Tournament Team, which is reserved for the top-10 finishers.
All-American Drew Goodman, who finished 11th at Whispering Pines in the 2022 Big 12 Championship, finished 15th at even par.
Stephen Campbell Jr. ended his week in a tie for 34th at 6-over.
Luke Kluver posted a 73 (+1) in the final round after subbing in for Ben Lorenz, who played the first three rounds.
The Sooners, ranked 14th nationally, will await their NCAA Regional location, unveiled during the NCAA Golf Selection Show on May 1 at 1 p.m. on Golf Channel. Oklahoma has appeared in 12 straight NCAA Regionals and has advanced to the NCAA Finals every year since 2011 — the second-longest streak in the nation.
