Lubbock, Texas – The University of Oklahoma track and field team wrapped up day two of the Big 12 Indoor Track and Field Championship Saturday night.
BJ Green earned his first Big 12 title, five Sooners scored top-eight finishes and three grabbed new personal records.
The women's team placed ninth with 35 points and the men's squad placed eighth with 41.5 points.
"I feel incredibly privileged to have coached this team, who despite their dissatisfaction with the final score, showed remarkable attitude, effort and grit over the last two days," stated head coach James Thomas. "We had a total of 22 career-best performances and several athletes solidified their spot in the upcoming NCAA Indoor Championships."
The women's shot put opened the day for the Sooners. Senior
Paige Low earned fourth place and scored for Oklahoma with a 16.80 (55-1.50) toss. Freshman Tuane Silver threw a career-high 14.74 (48-4.50) and
Kennedy Clarke registered a PR 14.26 (46-9.50).
Three Sooners competed in the women's triple jump where
Victory George and
Jasmine Akins jumped to season bests. Akins registered 12.42 (40-9) and George recorded 12.22 (40-1.25).
Agur Dwol grabbed a 12.08 (39-7.75) mark.
The Sooners swept the men's triple jump.
BJ Green took first place with a 16.46 (54-0) jump, holding steady at the first place the entirety of the event.
Floyd Whitaker earned third with a personal-record 15.93 (52-3.25) jump, the No. 8 mark in OU indoor history. Green and Whitaker accounted for a combined 16 points toward the men's team score.
"BJ led from start to finish and kept his composure when challenged by other competitors," said assistant coach for horizontal jumps, Austin Davis.
Nicholas Young scored with a sixth place finish in the men's mile, clocking in at 4:06.16.
In distance, junior
Gabi Barrera ran for 9:53.28 in the women's 3000m.
Erin O'Brien grabbed a 10:17.45 time.
Freshman
Kyren Washington and
Tyson Ritz competed in the men's high jump. Ritz recorded 2.10 (6-10.75) for ninth and Washington registered 2.01 (6-7).
To conclude field events, graduate
Diego Trevino grabbed second place in the men's shot put, posting a season-best 19.26 (63-2.25) throw.
Bryant Parlin recorded 17.28 (56-8.50).
Freshman
Dominic Kipnyango Serem raced to fourth place, scoring for the Sooners with an 8:01.33 time.
Thobias Cheruiyot earned an 8:10.58 finish.
The women's 4x400 relay of
Jada Atkinson,
Jayda Gibson,
Alyia Green and
Jenna James posted a 3:41.93 time for 10th place.
"As a coach, I have always envisioned track as a true team sport, and I am proud to say this group is quickly becoming a team," added Thomas.

UP NEXT
The Sooners with qualifying marks will travel to the NCAA Indoor Championships in Boston, March 8-9. The rest of the squad will prepare for their first outdoor meet at the TCU Alumni Classic March 15-16.
