November 04, 2024 | Men's Golf
MAUI, Hawai'i – For the third time in as many years, Oklahoma men's golf is the champion of the Ka'anapali Classic after firing a 42-under par mark at the 54-hole tournament. Jaxon Dowell claimed the individual title, producing a Sooner champion for the second consecutive season.
The win for the Sooners (1, -42) was Oklahoma's third of the fall slate and 48th of the Ryan Hybl era. No. 2-ranked Oklahoma closes the fall with a 62-5-1 record vs. opponents across five fall events.
"It's always great to finish the fall with a win," head coach Ryan Hybl said. "We've played well enough to win this thing a bunch, and we're excited to take this momentum into the offseason. We always talk about being on the right side of momentum and this fall has been really good for us in that department. The guys have just done a great job this fall. That said, I felt like we didn't really play our best this week and we could've made a push to be in that 50-under par range. So we've got some stuff we need to work out before we get into the spring."
Dowell (1, -16) was dominant in his first career win as the senior played unattached from the OU lineup. He carded rounds of 63-66-67 to hold off teammate Clark Van Gaalen by one stroke. The Edmond, Okla., product birdied the 54th and final hole to win the tournament.
"I'm so happy for Jaxon," Hybl continued. "We talked last night about taking advantage of opportunities and he absolutely did that this week. Couldn't be more excited for him."
Van Gaalen (2, -15), a true freshman from Turlock, Calif., grabbed second place and played unattached from the lineup. Van Gaalen surged on Monday, posting a 7-under mark thru eight holes to move into a tie for first, but a double-bogey gave Dowell the edge coming down the stretch. The solo second finish marks the best finish of his young career.
"It was so cool to have Jaxon and Clark play with each other today," Hybl added. "It really was like a dual that'd we'd have back home in our qualifying. It was just two really great players going back and forth. Clark made a huge par putt on the last hole and Dowell just made an incredible birdie putt to win."
Jase Summy (6, -13) finished as Oklahoma's top finisher in the lineup, posting a solo sixth-place finish at 13-under par. His rounds of 65-67-68 paced the Sooners at the par-71 track.
Matthew Troutman (-10) finished in a tie for 12th with teammate Asher Whitaker, who made his debut this week as a true freshman.
Sophomore Ryder Cowan (-9) grabbed a share of 14thwhile PJ Maybank III (E) rounded out Hybl's lineup in a tie for 69th. a
The Sooners will return to action in the spring when they open the spring with the Puerto Rico Classic on Feb. 10.
