OU Sweeps Mississippi State with Saturday Win
March 11, 2023 | Softball
STARKVILLE, Miss. — No. 1 Oklahoma completed a two-game sweep of RV/RV Mississippi State with a 9-3 win Saturday in Starkville. On the weekend, OU collected two wins over MSU and a Friday victory over Southeastern Louisiana.
OU (20-1) outscored the opposition 29-3 on the weekend with the offense hitting four home runs and the pitching staff tossing two shutouts, including one perfect game from Jordy Bahl, and 24 strikeouts.
After an eventful first inning that saw both teams load the bases but each pitcher get out of the jams, Oklahoma put up nine runs in the second inning that proved enough.
After three straight singles from Alynah Torres, Alyssa Brito and Jordy Bahl, junior Jayda Coleman opened the scoring with a two-RBI single up the middle. After Coleman stole second, Bahl was able to race home on a wild pitch to make it 3-0, OU.
Still in the second, junior Tiare Jennings knocked a single to left field and stole second before super senior Haley Lee brought her and Coleman around on a two-run double to left. OU's next run came via a Bulldog error allowing Lee to scoot home. Torres brought Hansen in on an RBI double down the left line before Brito continued her tear at the plate with a two-run blast to left field. It was Brito's fourth home run of the season and second straight game going yard.
Mississippi State (17-7) pushed across a pair of runs in the third and a single run in the seventh to chip away at the Sooner lead.
The Bulldogs plated a pair via RBI singles from Chloe Malau'ulu and Kiersten Landers in the third. Redshirt senior pitcher Alex Storako entered and limited the damage, leaving the bases loaded.
In the seventh, a solo home run from Paige Cook concluded the game's scoring.
In the circle, Storako earned her sixth win of the season, pitching four innings of relief and striking out six, allowing no runs on three hits and no walks. Bahl started the contest and struck out three while walking four and surrendering two runs on three hits in two innings pitched. Freshman Kierston Deal closed the game in the seventh, striking out one and allowing one run on one hit.
Oklahoma is outscoring opponents 191-17 on the season with 35 home runs and a .392 team batting average. The pitching staff holds a 0.96 team ERA with 164 strikeouts and 14 shutouts.
After Oklahoma's scheduled Sunday game vs. Omaha at the Bulldog Invitational was canceled due to weather, the Sooners quickly picked up a game on Monday vs. South Dakota State in Norman. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. CT at Marita Hynes Field. Broadcast information is to be determined. The game can be heard via 107.7 The Franchise or 1560 The Franchise 2 in Oklahoma and nationwide on The Varsity app. A limited number of single-game tickets for the game will go on sale Monday morning at 10 a.m. CT.
