Women's Golf Opens Season at Carmel Cup

NORMAN - The University of Oklahoma women's golf team starts its fall slate of tournaments at the Carmel Cup at Pebble Beach Golf Links Sept. 2-4.

The 54-hole event features seven other teams, including in-state foe Oklahoma State and the reigning national champion, Stanford. Arkansas, Mississippi State, Texas A&M, Texas Tech and Vanderbilt comprise the remainder of the field. It is the first women's Carmel Cup, and previously had been played by men's teams since its inception in 2011.

Nina Lang, Maria Fernanda Martinez, Mikhaela Fortuna and Meagan Winans return to the OU lineup and are joined by newcomers Raychel Nelke and Savannah Barber.

The Sooners are under the direction of Veronique Drouin-Luttrell and associate head coach Ryan Sirman. Oklahoma has made 10 NCAA Regional appearances under Drouin-Luttrell and competed in the Albuquerque Regional to conclude the 2022 season.

OU LINEUP

Nina Lang, Jr., Ingolstadt, Germany: Competed in five events (one individual) during the 2021-22 slate … Made first appearance in the Crimson and Cream at the Schooner Fall Classic as an individual and finished T27 (6-over, 216) … Appeared in the OU lineup for the first time at the Illini Invitational (8-over 224) ... Finished her first year in the Crimson and Cream with a 74.87 stroke average.

Raychel Nelke, Fr., Pocola, Okla.: Attended Pocola High School ... Tallied four top-10 finishes on the AJGA circuit ... Finished sixth at the Accenture NW Arkansas Junior ... Third-place finish at the Westrock Coffee Junior Championship ... Winner of the 2020 Southern Hills Oklahoma Junior Masters, girls division.

Maria Fernanda Martinez, R-Sr., Veracruz, Mexico: Competed in 11 events (10 stroke play events) during 2021-22 … Posted a 73.81 scoring average … Tied for sixth at the Olde Stone Intercollegiate and earned her first collegiate top-10 finish (7-over, 223) … Earned T20th finish at The Bruzzy and finished the tournament with a 2-over 218 … Two rounds in the 60s … Named to the All-Big 12 Academic Second Team … Fired a career low 66 in the final round of the Mountain View Collegiate … Tied for 32nd at the Big 12 Championship (17-over, 230) … Competed at the NCAA Albuquerque Regional and tied for 54th (14-over, 230) ... Made the OU lineup 22 time ... Career 74.34 stroke average.

Savannah Barber, Fr., Fort Worth, Texas: Ranked No. 79 by the American Junior Golf Association ... Tallied five top 10 finishes in AJGA play ... Runner-up finish at the 2021 AJGA Shreveport Junior Tournament ... Teamed up to win the 6th U.S. Women's Amateur Four-Bal Championship ... Tied for 33rd at the U.S. Women's Amateur Championship.

Meagan Winans, So.., Richardson, Texas: Competed in all 12 events (11 stroke-play events) for the Sooners in 2021-22… Opened the season tied for 28th at the Sam Golden Invitational (1-under, 215) … Led the Sooners at the Schooner Fall Classic and finished T21 (4-over, 214) … Recorded third consecutive top-30 finish at the Illini Invitational and tied for 27th (E, 216) …Fired a career-low 68 in the second round of the Clover Cup) … Competed in the NCAA Albuquerque Regional and tied for 56th (16-over, 230) … Three rounds in the 60s.

Mikhaela Fortuna, Sr., Manila, Philippines: Competed in 11 events (10 stroke play events) for the Sooners in 2021-22 … Second on the team with a 73.54 scoring average and average to par (1.82) … Opened the year with a 9-under 207 at the Sam Golden Invitational and tied for seventh … Matched her career-best 54-hole score with a 207 (-9) at the Jim West Challenge and earned her career-best finish (T4th) … Finished Red Raider Match Play 2-1 … One of two Sooners to finish in the top 20 (T19th) at the Big 12 Championship … Tied for 42nd at the Albuquerque Regional (9-over, 225) ... Appeared in the OU lineup in 30 career events ... 13 career rounds in the 60s and holds a 73.19 stroke average.

FORMAT

Fifty-four holes will be played over three days with 18 holes each day starting Friday, Sept. 2.
