May 19, 2022 | Track and Field

NORMAN — University of Oklahoma track and field freshman Olivia Lueking was named the Big 12 Women's Freshman of the Year, the conference announced Thursday. Lueking is the fifth Oklahoma track and field athlete to earn the honor in the outdoor season.

"I couldn't be more happy for Olivia," head coach Tim Langford said. "I also cannot think of a more deserving person as a pole vaulter. Coach Jerel Langley has worked tirelessly with her and together they have shown amazing improvement."

The freshman from League City, Texas, earned the honor after claiming the women's pole vault title at the Big 12 Outdoor Championships in Lubbock, Texas. Lueking cleared a new school record at 14-7.50 (4.46m) in her outdoor championships debut. The jump moved her to sixth in the nation, second in the world for U20 and 20th overall in the world. In addition, Lueking originally broke the school record at 1-7.25 (4.45m) in her first collegiate outdoor meet at the Texas Relays, then went on to claim four more first-place finishes, including the Big 12 title.

Lueking and the Sooners wait to find out which student-athletes qualify to compete at the NCAA West Regionals in Fayetteville, Ark., May 25-28.
