OU Dominates Tech for Sweep, Historic Start
April 10, 2022 | Softball
LUBBOCK, Texas — No. 1 Oklahoma completed the series sweep over Texas Tech in dominating fashion, winning 21-0 in five innings.
With the win, Oklahoma set the record for best start in Division I softball history at 36-0.
In the circle, pitchers Jordy Bahl and Nicole May combined on OU's sixth no-hitter of the season, while the Sooner bats blasted a season-high seven home runs.
The Sooners (36-0, 6-0 Big 12) did not allow Texas Tech (19-19, 2-7) to score a run on the weekend, outscoring the Red Raiders 43-0 in 15 innings. The offense hit 17 home runs to bring OU's season total to 100.
The 21 runs was a season high for the Sooners, putting up runs in each of the five innings they went to the plate.
In the first, junior Kinzie Hansen and senior Grace Lyons blasted homers in consecutive at-bats as the third and fourth hitters of the game. Junior Rylie Boone and sophomore Alyssa Brito contributed RBI doubles to the six-run first inning for the Sooners.
The second inning saw OU put up seven runs on six hits and a Tech error, including three home runs. After a 2-RBI single from Boone, senior Jana Johns and Brito went back-to-back for OU's second straight inning of consecutive homers. Alo brought in another pair on a deep shot to center, her first round-tripper of the game.
Freshman Turiya Coleman registered her second run batted in of the season in the third inning. The pinch hitter brought in Lyons on an RBI groundout for OU's only run of the third.
In the fourth, fellow freshman Sophia Nugent laced an RBI double to left before an RBI groundout from Lyons scored OU's second of two runs in the frame.
The Sooners went yard another two times in the top of the fifth to put OU over the 20-run mark for the second time in 2022.
After the team loaded the bases on a pair of walks and a Boone double, sophomore Tiare Jennings ripped her third career grand slam to plate four more. Following Jennings was the NCAA all-time home run leader, Alo, who hit career No. 109 and her NCAA-leading 20th of the season on a laser to left center. It was OU's third time of the game with homers in consecutive at-bats as well as team home run No. 100. It marked Alo's 13th multi-homer game of her career.
May finished the game with a strikeout in the fifth, her second of the game. May went 2.1 innings of the no-hitter and walked one, while Bahl went 2.2 to collect her 16th win of the season and struck out three. The two also combined on the Sooners 21st shutout of the season and fifth consecutive.
At the plate, 10 Sooners registered a hit in the contest, including every starter. Six Sooners had a multi-hit game while a trio had three hits. Nine brought in at least one run with seven batting in two-plus.
Jennings and Alo each went 3-for-4 in the contest with Jennings bringing in four runs on her grand slam and Alo batting in three on the day. Boone went a perfect 3-for-3 with a trio of RBIs as well.
Lyons continued her tear at the plate with her eighth home run in her last seven games in a 2-for-4, two RBI showing. The shortstop has 17 on the season for second-best on the team. Hansen blasted her sixth home run of the season and second in as many games after not homering since Feb. 26. Johns also homered for the first time since Feb. 26 vs. Tennessee for her eighth on the year, while Brito launched her seventh.
Next up, No. 1 OU meets No. 19/19 Texas in Austin, April 14-16. The teams play Thursday and Friday at 6 p.m. CT before a 1 p.m. finale on Saturday. All three games can be seen on Longhorn Network and heard via 107.7 The Franchise in Oklahoma and nationwide on The Varsity app.
