NORMAN – Freshman
Olivia Lueking and redshirt junior
Vernon Turner were named the 2022 USTFCCCA DI Midwest Region Field Athletes of the Year, the association announced Thursday.
"I cannot express in words my excitement for Olivia and Vernon," said head coach
Tim Langford. "Olivia receiving this as a freshman make me feel really good about our future together and Vernon coming around full circle to win is truly a testimony. Having one athlete to receive regional athlete of the year is amazing, but to have two athletes is completely mind blowing to me. I'm so grateful to
Jerel Langley and the work he's doing in this area. We are so happy for them and look forward to this coming outdoor season."
Lueking, a true freshman, took fourth in pole vault at NCAA's, clearing a 14-5.50 (4.41m) to claim first-team All-America honors. In her first indoor season, Lueking set the Big 12 meet record en route to a conference championship, setting another school record in the process. The League City, Texas, product has won five of her six meets this season, setting personal bests and school records in four of those contests. Currently, Lueking is ranked as the No. 3 U20 pole vaulter in the world by World Athletics.
Turner became the first Sooner to win the NCAA Indoor High Jump national championship last week, clearing a season-best 7-7.25 (2.32m) at the championship. His 7-7.25m jump set the facility record as the Yukon (OK) High School product became the collegiate leader and moved up to No. 2 globally. His championship-winning mark was the sixth-best jump in NCAA Indoor history and highest since 2014. Before making history, he won the Big 12 Indoor title on his last attempt for a then season-best.
The Sooners will travel to Fort Worth, Texas, for their outdoor-season opener at the TCU Invitational March 18-19.
