NORMAN — Oklahoma softball freshman Jordy Bahl and sophomore Tiare Jennings combined to sweep the first Big 12 weekly awards of the 2022 season, the conference announced the honors Tuesday.
Bahl claimed Big 12 Pitcher of the Week for her opening weekend performance that included 24 strikeouts in 12.2 innings pitched (3 appearances), including a 14 K, complete-game performance vs. No. 3 UCLA on Saturday, a 4-1 OU win. Bahl collected two wins and one save in OU's five games, surrendering just five hits and three walks over the weekend and gave up no earned runs.
The frosh, recently named Wilson/NFCA DI National Pitcher of the Week, also combined on a perfect game in the season opener vs. UC-Santa Barbara with pitchers Nicole May and Hope Trautwein. Bahl struck out four of the eight batters she faced in 2.2 innings.
Jennings picked up where she left off in 2021 during OU's opening weekend in 2022. The sophomore hit four home runs over OU's five games, batting .357 with 7 RBIs and 9 runs scored, also drawing 5 walks and stealing two bases on two attempts. The San Pedro, Calif., native totaled a .526 on-base percentage and a 1.214 slugging percentage. Jennings struck out just once over the weekend, helping OU to a 5-0 start, including a win over No. 3 UCLA.
It marks Bahl's first career Big 12 weekly honor and Jennings fifth career accolade, winning four as a freshman a season ago.
Bahl, Jennings and the Sooners return to action this weekend, Feb. 18-20, in Houston for the Houston Classic. OU matches up with host Houston twice, McNeese State and Texas State. The action will be available to watch on ESPN+ and heard on The Franchise 2 (103.3 FM/1560 AM) in Oklahoma.
