MANHATTAN, Kan. - The University of Oklahoma track and field team kicked off their indoor season in Manhattan, Kan., Saturday at the K-State Winter Invitational.
The Sooners closed out the day with twelveĀ first-place finishes and eightĀ additions to the OU history book, including a broken schoolĀ record. Ā
"Today was a great meet," said head coach Tim Langford. "The athletes accomplished exactly what we asked of them, an honest look at our progress."
The women's long jump group started out the day for OU, with juniorĀ Jasmine Akins claiming first place with a mark of 19-4.25 (5.90m), while graduate student Symone Washington took home second place at 18-4.24 (5.59m). Freshmen Agur Dwol and Jada Williams rounded out the group in fourth and fifth place, respectively.
On the men's side of the long jump, newcomer Nikaoli Williams took home first place after marking 24-4.25 (7.42m) and sophomore Cam Peters finished second with a 22-3.75 (6.80m).
In the women's shot put, senior Payden Montana took home first place after throwing for 55-10.5 (17.03m), while juniorĀ Paige Low claimed second place with a 52-11.5 (16.14m).
Next, sophomore Grace Williamson recorded a first-place finish in the women's mile, crossing the finish line at 5:25.37.
The Sooners claimed the top-four spots in the women's 60-meter dash, with junior Lilan HendersonĀ snagging first place and a new personal best at 7.66. She was followed by Kennedy Crutchfield in second (7.75), Grace Posey in third (7.80), and Kailey Carnine in fourth (7.84).
OU's stellar performance on the track continued during the men's 60-meter dash, where the Sooners claimed the top-six spots. SophomoreĀ Josh Bour notched a personal best and finished firstĀ with 6.733. He was followed closely by Carter Cukerstein (6.738), Quoi Ellis (6.77), A'lajuwan Robinson (6.80), Zarik Brown (6.80), and Richard Kuykendoll (6.98).
In the men's 60-meter hurdles, junior Paul Martin recorded a personal best after finishing second with a time of 7.97. FreshmanĀ David Warmington took home third with a time of 8.20.
The women's 300 meters was dominated by OU with all five Sooners claiming the top-five spots. Destini Jeter crossed the finish line first with a time of 40.56, while also claiming the fourth fastest time in OU history. HendersonĀ (41.52) andĀ Carnine (41.75) landed in the OU history books as well, after finishing second and third, respectively. In addition, Crutchfield (42.61), and Posey (42.82) recorded personal bests.
On the men's side of the 300-meter race, Kuykendoll broke his own school record, while running a personal best and finishing in first place at 33.27. SeniorĀ Muzuri Mattar claimed second place, as well as the second-fastest time in OU history with 33.86. In addition,Ā redshirt sophomore Salim Epps recorded a personal best and a spot in the record books after finishing in third at 33.94.
In the men's shot put, the Sooners claimed the top-three spots with seniorĀ Diego Trevino throwing for 61-5.50 (18.73m) for first place and the fifth best performance in OU history. Freshman Tucker Smith also added his name to the record books andĀ claimed second place at 59-2.75 (18.05). Lastly, seniorĀ Bryant Parlin threw for third place with 57-7.75 (17.57m).
Akins snagged first place in the women's triple jump after clearing 39-10 (12.14m), while sophomore Airiana Dargan came in second after jumping 38-9 (11.81m).
Back on the track for the women's 600 yards race, sophomore Jenna James crossed the line first for the Sooners with a time of 1:23.16. Newcomer Ashonti Warner took second (1:26.01), freshman Kailynn Jackson claimed third (1:27.16), and freshman Kel McDavid recorded fourth (1:28.58).
The Sooners capped the meet with freshmen Brandon Green Jr.Ā and Jayden Louis-CharlesĀ making their Sooner debut in the men's triple jump. Green captured first place with a mark of 49-8.50 (15.15m) and Louis-Charles notched second after clearing 48-3.50 (14.72m).
"The day was full of personal records on both sides, as well as a school record in the men's 300 by Richard Kuykendoll," said Langford. "It was a great way to end a semester of training and provides optimism for the upcoming semester."
