October 17, 2022 | Track and Field

NORMAN – The University of Oklahoma track and field and cross country community mourns the loss of former team manager and longtime supporter Owen Hewett, who passed away Sunday morning. He was 84.

Hewett served as the track and field team manager from 1956-60 and remained a dedicated backer of the program since his time on campus. In 2005, the men's locker room was named the "Owen M. Hewett Men's Locker Room," a nod to his perseverance as well as his dedication to and passion for the Sooners.

For over 30 years, the track and field program has presented the Owen Hewett Award, which recognizes excellence in competition and in the classroom. The award, started in 1990 by former OU head coach J.D. Martin, is the highest honor given by the OU track and field program. The award embodies the characteristics of the ultimate student-athlete. It is presented annually to a male and female who hold a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better and are outstanding performers in track and field.

"We will greatly miss Owen," said OU head coach Tim Langford. "His heart and passion for OU track and field was second to none. His commitment to our success served as an example of what I strive to achieve in serving this program. He reminded us of the culture and tradition of this program. The mark he left will never be forgotten."
