MEDINAH, Ill. – Mikhaela Fortuna and Savannah Barber led the University of Oklahoma women's golf team through the first 36 holes of the Illini Invitational at Medinah Country Club Monday.
The Sooners are 14th and recorded rounds of 293-283, finishing even par 576. Fortuna is the team leader with a 3-under 141 and Barber is 2-under 142.
The Sooners opened the day with a 5-over 293 and were led by Barber and Maria Fernanda Martinez. The duo fired an even par 72.
Barber dropped a stroke on her second hole of the day and quickly climbed to 2-under with the help of three birdies in her next seven holes. She moved to 1-over on the front nine after a bogey on the fifth hole and gained back a stroke with her final birdie of the round on the seventh.
Martinez started on the ninth hole and finished the back nine 1-over 37. She tallied her third birdie of the round on the par-4 second hole, moving her to even. Martinez lost a stroke on the fifth hole and moved back to even on the eighth, recording her fourth birdie of the round.
Fortuna finished the opening round with a 1-over 73. Kaylee Vesely and Raychel Nelke each fired a 4-over 76.
Fortuna led the rally for the Sooners in the second round, firing a 4-under 68. Oklahoma tallied a 5-under 283 through its final 18 holes of the day.
She started her round with a birdie on the seventh and dropped a stroke on the 10th. Three holes later, Fortuna drained an eagle. She finished 2-under 34 on the back nine. Fortuna added one final birdie of the day on the third hole, tallying a 2-under 34 on the front.
Barber opened the second round on the ninth hole and completed the back nine 1-over 37. After making the turn, Barber rattled off three birdies on the second, fourth and seventh holes.
Vesely produced her best round of the tournament, scoring a 1-under 71. She finished the back nine down one stroke and tallied a pair of birdies on the front nine.
Martinez and Nelke each fired a 2-over 74.
