Last Time Out
On Sunday the Sooners hit the road for their last out of state dual of the season to face off with Northern Illinois in DeKalb, Ill., and walked away with a comfortable 34-3 win.Ā Wins in nine of the ten bouts with bonus points coming in five of them helped the team to its third highest team score of the season.Ā It was the third time this season that OU has held their opponent to only one weight class win.Ā
Tony Madrigal,
Willie McDougald,
Justin Thomas and
Jake Woodley all grabbed major decisions. NIU elected to forfeit the 184-pound match, giving
Darrien Roberts the win and six points.Ā
McDougald's major decision comes in only his second match in dual action in his young career and arrives on the heels of his victory over No. 21 Josh Edmond of Missouri in his collegiate dual debut. He is the first unranked Sooner to defeat a ranked opponent in two years.
Justin Thomas and
Anthony Mantanona both extended their active win streaks to six and five games respectively. Mantanona took down the only ranked wrestler the Sooners faced on Sunday in No. 20 Mason Kauffman in a 6-4 decision. Ā
THE LAST DANCE
The Sooners took the mat against the Cyclones last season in a double-header with Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, Iowa.Ā
The two squads found themselves locked in a heater that had to be decided by the final bout. OU fought back from down 15-9 after the 174-pound match with back-to-back wins from
Darrien Roberts and
Jake Woodley to take a 16-15 lead into the heavyweight match.
Josh Heindselman and No. 6 Gannon Gremmel of ISU even needed extra period to settle it, but Gremmel got the better of Heindselman and gave the Cyclones the 18-16 victory.Ā
Mitch Moore's first period pin (1:01) and
Jake Woodley's 12-0 major decision snagged vital bonus points to keep the Sooners in the fight. ISU did not earn any bonus points in the match.Ā
SCOUTING THE CYCLONES
The No. 7 Cyclones bring a seven match winning streak and a 9-1 record into McCasland Field House with their only loss on the season coming against the then No. 1 Iowa Hawkeyes 22-11.Ā
Their last match came in a Big 12 battle with North Dakota State in Ames, Iowa. The home team emerged victorious in a 26-9 win. They are 2-0 in Big 12 competition thus far this season.Ā
ISU has a ranked wrestler in every weight class except for 165, led by No. 1 David Carr at 157 and No. 8 Marcus Coleman at 184.Ā
Carr, the reigning national champion at 157 pounds and former Danny Hodge Trophy finalist, highlights a squad that features six NCAA qualifiers from last season.Ā 125-pounder Kysen Terukina has the most wins of any undefeated wrestler in his weight class with 11.Ā
SERIES HISTORY
The all-time series between these two programs is extremely tight, the fifth most competitive pairing in Oklahoma wrestling history of the matchups with at least ten meetings.Ā
The Cyclones hold the lead 48-43-1 with the first dual between the sides taking place in 1922. Ā Ā
The teams last faced off in Norman in McCasland Field House in Feb. 2020 in a 22-14 win for ISU. The Sooners most recent win against ISU came in Jan. 2018 by a score of 21-16.
COMPETITION HEATING UP
This weekend, the Sooners will face two representatives of the Hawkeye state in Iowa State and Northern Iowa. The matchups also represent two of the five most competitive matchups in Oklahoma wrestling's storied history.Ā
1. Wisconsin - Series tied 10-10-1Ā Ā Ā
2. Iowa - OU leads 16-14-1
3. Northern Iowa - UNI leads 5-8
4. Penn State - PSU leads 10-14
5. Iowa State - 48-43-1
FAMILIAR FOES
Jake Woodley,
Darrien Roberts,
Justin Thomas and
Anthony Mantanona all have the potential for rematches with their opponents from last season's match.Ā
Woodley is slated to face off with No. 16 Yonger Bastida, whom he defeated in a 12-0 major decision in their only previous meeting.Ā
Roberts has taken on No. 8 Marcus Coleman once before, two years ago. Thomas and No. 1 David Carr have done battle three times with every match being decided by four points or less.Ā
Mantanona could face Julien Broderson. The two wrestled twice last year, with Broderson winning a 4-3 decision in dual action, but Mantanona earning a pin (4:20) in the Big 12 tournament.Ā
PARTY LIKE ITS 2022
Since the start of the new year,
Justin Thomas and
Anthony Mantanona have won all of their matches going a combined 11-0 with a ranked win a piece and five bonus point victories in that stretch.Ā
Thomas' six match win streak is tied for the longest of his six year career. It is the third time he has won six in a row, both previous occasions coming in the 2018-19 season.Ā Mantanona's current five match streak falls one short of his career long of six that came at the start of the 2019-20 season. Ā Ā
SOONERS IN THE RANKINGS
The NCAA released its first Division I coaches' rankings last week with seven OU wrestlers making the initial list. These rankings are one of several criteria used to determine at-large bids and seeding for the NCAA tournament at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit Mar. 17-19. The program had seven NCAA qualifiers last season and have had 629 all-time.
Joey Prata,
Justin Thomas,
Joe Grello,
Anthony Mantanona,
Darrien Roberts,

Josh Heindselman each made the coaches' rankings in their respective weight classes.
At 133 and 149 pounds,
Tony Madrigal and
Mitch Moore did not meet the minimum requirements for the first set of rankings. The next batch is scheduled to be released on Feb. 20 and both will become eligible for consideration if they take the mat before then.
In the other national rankings, OU has ten wrestlers appearing across all the major rankings for the seventh time this season.
