NORMAN – A strong start for No. 21 Oklahoma had the match tied up after four bouts, but No. 7 Iowa State (10-1, 3-0 Big 12) pulled away down the stretch to claim a 22-9 win on Friday night in McCasland Field House.Ā

The Sooners (6-4, 2-3 Big 12) got big early wins from Joey Prata and Willie McDougaldĀ to see these conference foes knotted up at 6-6 after the 149-pound match. The next four bouts would go the Cyclones' way before Jake Woodley could pin one back,Ā and the no. 7 team in the country took the victory.Ā

"We've just got to be a lot better," said head coach Lou Rosselli. "We have to coach better and we haveĀ be better. That isĀ just the way it is. At the end of the day, if you want to be be successful in college wrestling you have to out work your opponent every second you are out there. You have to do more than him every second.

The opening bout of the night was No. 32 Joey Prata's (10-5) matchup with No. 19 Kysen Terukina. As has become a staple of his matches this season, PrataĀ came out with a lot of energy from the get go. He grabbed a take down with mere seconds left in the first period that propelled him to a 6-5 decisionĀ for his second ranked win of the season.Ā

Willie McDougald (8-3) continues to impress in his first dual action for the Crimson and Cream. In his dual debut last week, he defeated the then No. 21 Josh Edmond of Missouri and he went for an encore tonight against All-American and four-time NCAA qualifier No. 21 Jarrett Degen.

The Niagara Falls nativeĀ was the aggressor throughout the bout and finally got his reward in sudden victoryĀ where he secured the take down to nab a 4-2 decision. The winĀ makes itĀ three in three duals for the redshirt freshman.

"All IĀ want to see is someone who'sĀ effort and passion are through the roof," said Rosselli.Ā "I can live with any winning and losing if you have passion and are hungry. That's what Willie McDougald is. He's hungry. Our whole team should have that. When our whole team walks out and has that kind of grit you'll find aĀ top fiveĀ team."Ā

At 197, No. 14 Jake Woodley (16-5) fought for the third and final win on the night for OU over Iowa State's No. 16 Yonger Bastida. The bout was tied 2-2 late in the third period before Woodley got his take down to take a 4-2 decision. It is his seventh win over a ranked opponent this season.Ā

Tony Madrigal, Justin Thomas, Anthony Mantanona and Josh Heindselman all battled in razor thin matches but were unable to find the breakthrough necessary to put points on the board for the Sooners. The four bouts were decided by an average of only two points.Ā

"The great thing about wrestling is when you get punched in the mouth you get another chance to punch somebody else in the mouth right away," said Rosselli.Ā "We'll see how people respond. I'm hopeful that I see some guys respond in a real positive way. It's all about grit."

The Sooners will get that chance in just two days when they take the mat against Northern Iowa on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. CT in McCasland Field House. It will be the first time this season Rosselli's squad will have back to back home matches.Ā
