NORMAN – Oklahoma women's golf concluded the first two rounds of the 2021 Schooner Fall Classic with 7-over, 577 on the par-70, 6,094-yard Belmar Golf Club Sunday. OU enters the final day of competition eighth but within 10 strokes of second place Illinois.
"We did not perform how we wanted today and we need to focus on what we can do tomorrow," said
Veronique Drouin-Luttrell, "We have an opportunity to move up in the field and need to capitalize on playing on a familiar course."
The Sooners were led by
Meagan Winans, who tallied a 2-over 142, and fired her first career round in the 60s in the Crimson and Cream. She tallied a 1-under 69 to open play and netted three birdies on the back nine.
Maria Fernanda Martinez and
Mikhaela Fortuna each finished with a 5-over 145 with Fernanda Martinez recording a 71 to open the tournament.
Hannah Screen also tallied a 71 in the second round, her best of the day.
Libby Winans rounded out the OU lineup with rounds of 74-76.
A trio of Sooners competed as individuals.
Nina Lang fired her first round as a Sooner in the 60s, making three birdies on the back nine to finish with a 68 in the second round. She is tied for 24 after finishing with a 4-over 144 through the day.
Kaylee Vesely and
Nieves Martin Torre each made their first appearance of the season for OU.
The Sooners led the field in pars with 130 with Fortuna holding a tournament-best 29 through the first 36 holes. M. Winans tallied 28 to finish tied for second. OU held the fourth-best mark on par 4s and Lang recorded a 4-under on par-4 holes.
Oklahoma opens the final round of play at 8:50 a.m., off the first hole and is paired with Illinois and Iowa State.
