MANHATTAN, Kan. — Oklahoma's men's and women's track and field teams closed out the 2021 Big 12 Outdoor Championships in third and sixth place, respectively, in Manhattan, Kan., on Sunday afternoon.
Day three competition included a Big 12 champion, facility record, 18 podium finishes and several personal bests. The men's team finished with 105 points to take third, the Sooners' highest finish since the 2015 championships. The women claimed sixth with 76 points.
Redshirt senior Isaiah Levingston continued his impressive outdoor season, claiming the title in the men's 400-meter hurdles. Levingston, an Okla. native, clocked a personal best 49.12 en route to the title. His time downed the RV Christian Track facility record that was set in 1985. The last time a Sooner won the men's 400-meter hurdles title was Omar Brown in 1998.
Championship Sunday began for the Sooners on the track with the men's and women's 4x100-meter relays. On the men's side of the event, the squad finished fifth with a time of 40.15. The team consisted of redshirt senior Jackson Webb, senior Joseph Sheffield, junior Quoi Ellis and senior Demarius Smith. The women's team of redshirt junior Nura Muhammad, senior Ja'Leesa Giles, senior Camri Austin and junior Kennedy Blackmon, completed the race in 47.46.
Junior Jordyn Kaplan was the lone Sooner to compete in the women's 1,500 meters, running a 4:39.76 to finish in the top 10.
Austin returned to action, competing in the final of the women's 100-meter hurdles. The senior ran a time of 13.81 to take seventh and add points to the women's team score.
On the men's side of the event, senior Jasher Foster matched his personal best, clocking a 14.09 in the 110-meter hurdles. His time placed him in the top four, adding five points to OU's score.
The high jump squad podiumed another student-athlete with senior Falyn Reaugh finishing fourth on the women's side. Reaugh cleared a height of 5-7.25 (1.71m). She was joined by junior Madison Langley-Walker in the event. The junior cleared 5-5.25 (1.66m), finishing in a tie for 10th place.
Senior Lauren Jones and sophomore Payden Montana concluded the women's discus throw in the top eight. finished in the top eight, adding seven points to the women's team score. Jones, the women's hammer throw champion, threw 173-9 (52.96m) to take fourth. Montana took seventh with a mark of 163-1 (49.70m).
Three Sooners competed in the finals of the 100 meters, with one on the woman's side and two on the men's. Blackmon returned to the track to take fifth with a time of 11.44 in the women's race. On the men's side, Webb and Smith went back-to-back, finishing third and fourth, respectively. Webb clocked a 10.29, while Smith ran a 10.32.
In the women's triple jump, sophomore Mikeisha Welcome and senior Essence Thomas claimed top-five finishes. Welcome jumped 43-7.75 (13.30m) to take bronze, while Thomas leaped 43-3.25 (13.19m) en route to a fifth-place finish.
Langley-Walker returned to action, this time on the track, competing in the final of the women's 400-meter hurdles. The junior ran 58.41, to claim the silver medal and add eight points to her team's score.
Smith ran his third of fourth race on the day, competing in the final of the men's 200-meter dash. The senior clocked 20.74 to secure the bronze finish. On the women's side of the race, Blackmon took sixth with a time of 23.46.
Senior Rayvon Allen set a personal record in the men's triple jump, leaping 51-9.25 (15.78m) to claim the fifth-place finish. Allen's jump placed him 10th on OU's all-time top-10 list. Senior Garry Williams leaped 51-5.5 (15.68m), finishing in sixth and medaling in the event.
The championships closed out with the men's and women's 4x400-meter relays. The men impressed with a personal best 3:03.68, placing them ninth on OU's all-time top-10 list. The squad consisting of freshman Salim Epps, Smith, Allen and Levingston earned the silver finish in the event. On the women's side, the squad clocked a 3:44.00 for the ninth-place finish. The team included sophomore Nia Sims, Blackmon, Giles and senior Jai'Lyn Merriweather.
