Sooners Roll Into Big 12 Championship Game

May 14, 2021 | Softball

OKLAHOMA CITY — No. 1 Oklahoma (44-2, 16-1) swept through Friday's pool play at the Phillips 66 Big 12 Softball Championship to advance to Saturday's Big 12 Championship Game. The top-seeded Sooners beat Baylor 10-2 in five innings before topping Texas Tech 8-2 in the night cap.

Oklahoma hit a combined nine home runs in the two games, including six in the second game. It was the third game of the season the Sooners have hit six-plus home runs and set single-game program record in Big 12 Tournament play.

Sophomore Kinzie Hansen hit four home runs on the day, blasting two in each game. It marked the fourth and fifth time of her career with two round-trippers in one contest. Hansen finished Friday a combined 5-for-7 with seven RBIs.

Senior captain Lynnsie Elam had herself a game in OU's matchup with Texas Tech, hitting two home runs for the second time of her career to go with three runs batted in.

Also chipping in home runs on the day were freshmen Jayda Coleman and Tiare Jennings and senior Jocelyn Alo. It was Alo's 27th of the season, Jennings' 24th and Coleman's seventh. Oklahoma's program-record season total is up to 129.

Game One: OU 10, Baylor 2 (5 innings)

In game one, OU fell behind 2-0 to the Bears (27-20, 8-9) after the first inning before putting up a four-spot in the second on two hits and an error. After a sacrifice-fly from Taylon Snow, Coleman launched her second home run in the last four games on a deep three-run shot to put OU on top for good.

The Sooners scored in each inning thereafter, putting two across in the third, three in the fourth and one in the fifth.

Hansen brought in four of the last six runs via homers, while sophomore Mackenzie Donihoo (RBI double) and Jennings (sacrifice-fly RBI) each plated one.

Redshirt senior Shannon Saile collected her 15th win of the season, striking out 10 batters in a complete-game performance. It was her third game of the season with double-digits K's. Saile scattered six hits, surrendering just two runs (one earned), and two walks.

Nine Sooners recorded a hit in the first game with five registering RBIs. Hansen finished 2-for-3 with two home runs and four RBIs while Coleman went 2-for-3 with three runs batted in.

Game Two: OU 8, Texas Tech 2

Oklahoma returned to Hall of Fame Stadium after a short break to beat Texas Tech 8-2 in its second game of the day. The win was powered by six home runs and a solid outing from redshirt senior Giselle Juarez in the circle.

After OU put up the first run of the game on a solo shot from Elam in the top half of the second, the Red Raiders (20-26, 3-15) responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning to take the lead.

Following a scoreless third, the Sooners scored a combined seven runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings, all via the long ball.

In the fourth, Hansen hit a solo shot prior to a two-run round-tripper from Elam, her second of the game. Alo got in on the fun with her 81st career homer in the fifth.

Hansen and Jennings went back-to-back in the sixth, marking the second time of the game and 28th time of 2021 Oklahoma has hit two home runs in an inning. It was the 13th time OU has hit home runs in consecutive at-bats.

Juarez collected her team-best 16th win of the season in the circle, going 5.0 innings and striking out five to go with five hits, two runs (one earned) and zero walks. Freshman Nicole May pitched the final two innings, striking out four of the seven batters she faced and giving up just one hit and no walks. Eight Sooners collected a hit against the Red Raiders with four bringing in at least one run.

Oklahoma goes for the 2021 Big 12 title sweep in tomorrow's Big 12 Championship game versus in-state foe No. 7/9 Oklahoma State. The Sooners and Cowgirls meet at 3 p.m. CT at USA Softball Hall of Fame Stadium. OU is vying for it's fourth consecutive Big 12 title sweep and 19th overall conference crown.

The game can be seen via ESPN2 and heard on the radio on The Franchise 2 (103.3 FM, 1560 AM) in Oklahoma and nationwide on the TuneIn app.
