NORMAN — Oklahoma's men's and women's track and field teams opened day one of the Sooner Invitational with six wins, seven student-athletes advancing to tomorrow's finals competition and No. 1 spots in the decathlon and pentathlon heading into day two.
The first win of the Sooner Invitational came from senior Lauren Jones in the women's hammer throw. Jones recorded a personal best 64.98 meters in the event. Sophomore Geraldine Udo threw 49.09 meters to take seventh, while freshman Bailey Tilley marked a personal best 45.47 meters to finish top 10.
Senior Edward Jeans earned the Sooners' second victory on the day, sweeping hammer throw for the throws squad. Jeans threw a personal best 65.12 meters. Junior Bayley Campbell finished right behind Jeans, throwing a personal record 64.54 meters.
Junior Symone Washington secured a win in the women's long jump, leaping a personal record 6.24 meters. Senior Essence Thomas and redshirt junior Nura Muhammad went back-to-back, finishing second and third, respectively. Thomas jumped 6.09 meters, while Muhammad leaped 5.88 meters. Two more Sooners joined the squad in the top six with sophomore Mikeisha Welcome leading the way. Welcome finished fifth with a mark of 5.73 meters. Senior Helena McLeod jumped 5.63 meters to close out in sixth place.
OU's fourth win on the day came from sophomore Carson Hockersmith in the women's 5,000-meter run. Hockersmith set a personal record of 17:42.14, improving her previous time by 14 seconds. Hockersmith was joined by sophomore Madeline Medina in the race. Medina marked a personal best time of 18:25.17, earning a fourth-place finish.
Senior Cooper Campbell kept things rolling for the throws squad, winning the men's shot put. Campbell threw 18.00 meters to earn the win. Redshirt senior Bradley Daboub threw 17.08 meters to finish third. Sophomores Bryant Parlin and Diego Trevino went back-to-back, finishing sixth and seventh, respectively. Parlin threw 16.80 meters, while Trevino threw 16.64 meters.
OU's last win of day one competition came from junior Faith Ette in the women's shot put. Ette threw a personal best 16.53 meters in the event. Sophomore Payden Montana finished one spot behind Ette, throwing 15.99 meters. Sophomore Crislyn Cole threw a personal best mark of 13.11 meters to earn ninth place.
Junior Madison Langley-Walker finished day one women's heptathlon events in first place with 3,334 points. Langley-Walker tallied three wins and three personal records on four events. She started the day with the 100-meter hurdles, clocking a 13.81. She went on to clear a personal best height of 1.78 meters in the high jump, taking first. The junior from Pa. threw a personal best 8.80 meters in the shot put and finished the day with a personal best 24.59 and first-place finish in the 200 meters. Langley-Walker will return to action at 10:30 a.m.
On the men's side of the multis, junior Kristo Simulask concluded the first day of competition on top of the decathlon with 3,747 points. Simulask tallied top-three finishes in five events on the day, taking first in the long jump with a personal best 6.71 meters. The junior closed day one with a personal best 51.07 in the 400-meter dash. Simulask was joined by fellow junior Will Kubicek in the event. Kubicek holds 3,071 points, recording a personal best 53.98 in the 400-meter competition. The two will continue multis action at 10:30 a.m.
Seven Sooners across the men's and women's sprinters advanced to the 100-meter dash final. On the men's side, redshirt senior Jackson Webb finished first in the prelims, clocking a 10.24. Webb will be joined by junior Quoi Ellis and senior Joseph Sheffield in the final. Both Ellis and Sheffield ran a 10.73, finishing fifth and sixth, respectively. On the women's side, junior Deborah Giffard ran a 11.95 to take fourth, while freshman Grace Posey ran a 12.10 for fifth place. Freshman Lilan Henderson finished two spots behind Posey, clocking a 12.22. Junior Kailey Carnine secured the Sooners' last final spot, finishing in 12.43.
On the track, freshman Bryant Pelkey made his collegiate track debut, competing in the men's 5,000-meter run. Pelkey ran 16:00.72 to finish second.
Redshirt junior Vernon Turner jumped 7.17 meters in his long jump debut, finishing in second overall. Senior Garry Williams finished one spot behind Turner, leaping 7.15 meters.
OU will return to action tomorrow at 9:30 a.m. CT with the women's javelin throw.
