OU Impresses at Outdoor Opener

FORT WORTH, Texas — Oklahoma's men's and women's track and field teams began their 2021 outdoor campaign at the TCU Invitational in Fort Worth, Texas, on Saturday. The Sooners completed the meet with 14 victories and numerous personal records. 

Senior Lauren Jones got the outdoor campaign started with OU's first victory on the day. Jones recorded a personal-best 177-04 (54.05m) in the women's discus throw to secure the win. The senior was joined by sophomore Payden Montana in the event. Montana, who made her outdoor debut with the Sooners, threw 164-06 (50.14m) to finish fourth. 

The Sooners' second win of the meet came from senior Falyn Reaugh. Reaugh and junior Madison Langley-Walker went one and two in the event, both clearing 5-8.50 (1.74m). Langley-Walker notched a personal record in the event. 

The third win came in the women's 4x100-meter relay. The squad consisting of Kennedy Blackmon, Deborah Giffard, Ja'Leesa Giles and Lilan Henderson took first in the relay with a time of 45.54.

In her 1,500-meter run debut, junior Jordyn Kaplan secured the win with a time of 4:40.99. She notched the Sooners' fourth win on the meet. 

Jones notched her second victory and the team's fifth with an impressive hammer throw performance. Jones recorded a mark of 213-00 (64.92m), improving her spot from fourth to third on OU's all-time top-10 list. The senior claimed two victories and two PRs on the day. Sophomore Geraldine Udo took fifth with a 167-07 (51.08m) in her hammer throw debut. 

The Sooners swept the 100-meter dash, securing wins on both the men's and women's sides. The women competed first with Blackmon taking first in the event, recording a personal-best 11.57. Freshman Lilan Henderson recorded a 12.34 and eighth-place finish in her outdoor debut.

On the men's side, redshirt senior Jackson Webb took first with a personal-best 10.29. His time put him in a tie for ninth on OU's all-time top-10 list. This was the senior's first meet back since the 2020 indoor season. Sophomore Alajuwan Robinson joined Webb in the race, finishing in 10.62. Robinson claimed fifth. 

Langley-Walker made her collegiate debut in the women's 400-meter hurdles, claiming first with a 58.93. The junior's time places her second on OU's all-time top-10 list. Senior Erin Huls took fourth after clocking 1:03.57.

Senior Rayvon Allen notched OU's ninth win of the meet in the men's long jump. Allen leaped a personal-best 25-6.75 (7.79m) and secured the seventh spot on OU's all-time top-10 list. 

Freshman Berry Cox took first in the men's 3,000-meter run, claiming the Sooners' 10th win. The freshman's first collegiate win came from a time of 8:42.30. Redshirt sophomore Jordan Gledhill took fifth with a time of 8:53.89.

In her outdoor debut as a Sooner, Montana took first in the women's shot put, throwing 52-1.75 (16.52m). Her throw places her fifth on OU's all-time top-10 list. Junior Faith Ette finished second with a 52-0.75 (15.87m) mark.

Senior Garry Williams notched OU's 12th win on the day, claiming first in the men's triple jump. Williams leaped 50-3.50 (15.33m). Freshman Kunle Akinlosotu took second in his outdoor debut, jumping 47-5.0 (14.45m).

Redshirt senior Sydney King tied for first in the women's pole vault, clearing 12-9.50 (3.90m). Senior Abby Bilsbury took third with a mark of 12-3.50 (3.75m).

The Sooners' 14th and final win on the day came from senior Cooper Campbell in the men's shot put. Campbell threw 60-0.50 (18.30m) to secure the win. Three other Sooners competed in the event with Campbell, going 3-4-5. Sophomore Diego Trevino took third, throwing 55-1.50 (16.80m), while redshirt senior Bradley Daboub went fourth with a 54-8.25 (16.67m). Sophomore Bryant Parlin threw 53-4.25 (16.20m), taking fifth. Parlin and Trevino made their collegiate outdoor debut. 

In the men's hammer throw, senior Edward Jeans threw a personal-best 210-04 (64.13m), securing second place. 

The Sooners were able to compete their javelin squads for the first time since 2019. On the women's side, sophomore Kayla Kurtz took third, throwing 146-02 (44.57m). On the men's side, senior Josh Haus also finished third with his mark of 205 (62.56m).

On the track, freshman Salim Epps finished second in the men's 400-meter dash with a 47.01. Senior Devaniel Dale finished one spot behind Epps, crossing the line at 47.51. This was the duo's outdoor debut in the race. 

Senior Jasher Foster completed the men's 110-meter hurdles in 14.57, finishing third in his event debut. Junior Will Kubicek clocked a personal-best 15.32, taking sixth. 

In the men's discus, all three Sooners finished top 10 in the event. Daboub led the way, throwing 160-09 (49.00m) for a fourth-place finish. Parlin finished one spot behind Daboub, recording a throw of 159-11 (48.76m). Trevino took 10th with his 136-05 (41.95) mark. Parlin and Trevino made their outdoor debut, competing in discus for the first time in their collegiate careers. 

On the track, a trio of Sooners finished top 10 in the men's 1,500-meter run. All three athletes made their debut in the event. Redshirt sophomore Graham Santilli led the trio with a fifth-place finish and 4:01.35 time. Senior Derek King finished one spot behind Santilli, recording a time of 4:04.91. Redshirt junior Johnelle Joe ran a 4:13.91, taking ninth. 

In the women's 3,000-meter run, sophomore Carson Hockersmith made her outdoor debut, finishing in third with a 10:20.06.

Senior Ja'Leesa Giles finished second in the women's 200-meter dash, clocking in at 24.2. Fellow senior Jai'Lyn Merriweather crossed the line at 25.11, taking ninth. On the men's side, sophomore Alajuwan Robinson ran a 21.68, claiming seventh.

OU's women's 4x400-meter relay squad finished second in their race. The team consisting of Blackmon, Huls, Merriweather and sophomore Nia Sims clocked in at 3:45.31.

Senior Helena McLeod competed in the women's long jump, finishing 10th in her event debut. McLeod leaped 17-8.75 (5.40m). In the women's triple jump, junior Allanah Lee finished in third, notching a 41-7.75 (12.69m) mark. Redshirt junior Nura Muhammad took fifth with her 40-0.75 (12.21m) jump.

Redshirt senior Lucas Kelley closed out competition for the Sooners, competing in the men's pole vault. Kelley cleared 15-5.75 (4.72m), finishing in a tie for third.

The Sooners will travel to Austin, Texas for the prestigious Texas Relays, a four-day meet taking place March 24-27.
