OU in Fifth After 36 Holes

March 13, 2021 | Women's Golf

MESA, Ariz. – Hannah Screen collected five birdies and carded a 3-under 69 to move up 15Ā spots on Saturday into a tie for 11th in round two at the Clover Cup. Her day paced No. 23 Oklahoma to a 288 (E) as the Sooners moved into sole possession of fifth at the par-72, 6,184-yard Longbow Golf Club with 18 holes left to play.
Ā
OU (+8, 584) was one of just three teams out of the 12-team field to card a round at par or better on Saturday, which allowed head coach Veronique Drouin-Luttrell's team to move four shots ahead of sixth and just one back of fourth heading into Sunday's final round.

"We played much better today as a team," Drouin-Luttrell said. "I'm really proud of the team for fighting through tough conditions and rallying on the par fives. Yesterday we talked about staying in the present and we did a great job of that today."

The Sooners currently place three golfers inside the top 20, led by Screen at T11 and redshirt seniors Kaitlin Milligan and Ellen Secor closely behind.Ā

Screen (-1, T11), who has led the Sooners at three events this season put together one of her best rounds of the season on Saturday. Battling windy and rainy conditions at Longbow, the junior from England birdied holes nine thru 11, added another pair of birdies and tallied 11 pars to fire her team-high sixth round in the 60s of the year to grab a share of 11th after 36 holes.Ā

"Yesterday as a team we spoke about staying present and so today I just focused on hitting one shot at a time. I adjusted my course management slightly and committed to my putts," Screen said. "I'll need to do the same things as today and be accurate into the greens to give me lots of birdie looks to move up tomorrow."

Kaitlin Milligan (+2, T17) continued her strong play in Saturday's round, firing a 1-over 73 for the second consecutive day. The Norman product is on pace to secure the eighth top-20 finish in her last 13 events and 18th overall.Ā

Redshirt senior Ellen SecorĀ (+3, T20) shined on the back nine once again in round two. After firing a bogey-free 2-under 34 on Friday's back nine, she carded a bogey-free 35 on Saturday's back half of the course to move into a tie for 20th at 3-over.Ā

Libby WinansĀ (+5, T29)Ā answered her opening-round 76 with an improved 1-over 73 on Saturday to jump 14 spots on the leaderboard into a tie for 29th. The junior is currently two shots outside the top 20, which if she can close the gap would secure theĀ 11th top-20 finish of her career.Ā

Rounding out the Sooners lineup with a strong Saturday was sophomore Maria Fernanda Martinez (+6, T36) who also carded a 1-over 73 in round two to move up the leaderboard.

Oklahoma will tee off in Sunday's final round at 10 a.m. with No. 20 Houston and Clemson.
