Two Sooners Head to Matador Qualifier

NORMAN — The Oklahoma men's and women's track and field teams will travel two athletes to the Matador Qualifier in Lubbock, Texas, on Friday night.

The meet is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. CT, but OU will not get going until 5 p.m. Senior Cooper Campbell and sophomore Payden Montana are slated to compete in shot put for the Sooners.

TEXAS TECH SHOOTOUT REWIND

The Sooners competed in the Texas Tech Shootout, a two-day meet in Lubbock, Texas.

The Sooners' win of the meet came from redshirt sophomore Jordan Gledhill in the mile. Gledhill ran a personal-record 4:17.46 in the event. 

OU recorded numerous personal-best performances at the meet, as well as top-five finishes. 

On day one of the meet, senior Lauren Jones competed first for the Sooners, taking second in the women's weight throw. Jones threw a mark of 66-4.25 (20.22m) in the event. 

On the track, junior Jordyn Kaplan ran a personal-record 2:13.51 in the women's 800 meters, securing the fourth-place finish. 

Senior Rayvon Allen finished fourth in the men's long jump, recording a leap of 23-11.75 (7.31m). 

Back on the track, seniors Demarius Smith and Joseph Sheffield competed in the men's 60-meter dash. Smith advanced to the finals after running a preliminary 6.67. In the 60 meter final, Smith matched his previous time, which is his personal record, and claimed the fourth-place spot. 

The Sooners started day two strong in the women's shot put where a trio of Sooners went third, fourth and fifth in the event. Sophomore Payden Montana threw 54-1 (16.48m) in her last throw, securing a third-place finish. Jones took fourth with her personal-record 53-4.25 (16.26m) throw. Jones's throw placed her on OU's all-time top-10 list, holding the No. 8 spot. Junior Faith Ette took fifth with a 51-7 (15.72) throw. All three Sooners best mark came from their last throw. 

On the men's side of the event, senior Cooper Campbell threw a mark of 59-3.5 (18.07m) to claim fourth.

On the women's side of the high jump, junior Madison-Langley Walker took second, clearing 5-9.25 (1.76m). Redshirt junior Vernon Turner led the way for the men's squad, taking third with a clearing of 7-3.25 (2.22m). Junior Chris Banks recorded a season-best 6-10.25 (2.09m) and fifth place.

In the women's mile, Kaplan recorded her second personal record on the weekend, finishing the race in 5:00.63. Kaplan's time earned her second place. Sophomore Carson Hockersmith finished one spot behind Kaplan, recording a time of 5:05.76.

Allen led the way for OU in the men's triple jump, finishing in third. Allen recorded a personal-record 51-6.25 (15.70m) in the event, placing him No. 10 on OU's all-time top-10 list.

On the women's side of the triple jump, senior Essence Thomas's mark of 42-9.75 (13.05m) was good for a fifth-place finish. 

Freshman Branch Cox ran an 8:43.13, taking second in the men's 3,000-meter run.
