February 15, 2021 | Women's Golf
MELBOURNE, Fla.Ā - Mikhaela Fortuna paced the No. 9 Oklahoma women's golf team on Monday in round two of the Moon Golf Invitational, firing a 69 (-3) in just her second round of the season. Fortuna's five birdies were the second most among the field as she moved up 31Ā spots on the leaderboard into a tie for 37th after 36 holes.Ā
After 36 holes of play, the Sooners (591, +15) sit in 14th at the par-72, 6,383-yard Duran Golf Club.
"As a whole, we played better today," head coach Veronique Drouin-Luttrell said. "We had some really good moments on the course and gave ourselves opportunities. We have one more day to build some positive momentum."
For Fortuna, Monday's round marked the eighth round in the 60s of her career, and first since the second round of the 2020 Westbrook Invitational, nearly a year ago. Another strong round on Wednesday could send the junior into the top 20, which would notch the 10th top-20 finish of her career.Ā
"Mikha played a solid round today," Drouin-Luttrell said. "She looked really good all day and finally got some putts to start falling on her back nine."
The Sooners rebounded after a tough opening round, carding 34 pars on the front nine paired with five birdies. Early on the back nine, Drouin-Luttrell's team was 4-under on the day and moving up the leaderboard before a trio of late bogeysĀ gave Oklahoma a 287 (-1)Ā on the day. Oklahoma has been largely steady for the past two days, carding 122 pars, fourth most in the field.Ā
While Fortuna shinedĀ with her 3-under 69, Oklahoma is still led on the leaderboard by Hannah Screen (+1), whose even-par 72 gave her a share of 30thĀ entering the final day. The junior tallied bogeys on holes eight and nine and a birdie on seven but bounced back with a 1-under on the back nine to get back to even on the day.Ā
Joining Screen with a 72 on Monday was sophomore Maria Fernanda Martinez, who played a clean round of golf thru 15 holes before carding bogeyS on two of her final three holes. She is tied for 52ndĀ after 36 holes in Florida.Ā
Kaitlin Milligan and Libby Winans share 78th at 9-over on the tournament.Ā
The Sooners return to the par-72, 6,383-yard Duran Golf Club on Wednesday for the tournament's final round. Oklahoma's golfers will tee off at 7:45 on Wednesday morning.Ā
