ITA Fall Championships

November 07, 2021 | Men's Tennis
WACO, Texas — The Oklahoma men's tennis team capped the 2021 fall season at a pair of tournaments over the weekend.
The squad ended the weekend with 12 singles victories and six doubles wins, closing the fall slate with a combined 99 wins.
"This was another solid weekend for the OU men's tennis program with some big wins and another big title coming back to Norman," head coach Nick Crowell said. "We've competed more than any team in the country this fall and our guys have bought into the mission and the process. They have attacked the fall season with a consistent day-to-day building mindset that will help us reach our goals this spring."
At the Big 6 Fall Invite in Waco, Texas, doubles pair Welsh Hotard and Alex Martinez went on a 3-0 run to secure the doubles title in the main draw. The duo defeated Arevalo/Collier from Texas Tech, 8-7 (6) in the finals match. Hotard and Martinez also secured wins over Sekiguchi/Ribero and Wallin/Azoides of Texas Tech en route to the title.
"Welsh and Alex never gave up in the final despite being down 2-6," Crowell said. "That resiliency is what it takes to win at the highest level everyday. I am proud that they were able to stay strong mentally and find a way to win. We've been preaching that mindset all fall and it's fun to see that work pay off."
On the singles side of the tournament, Justin Schlageter advanced to the finals of his draw before falling 6-3, 6-3 to Isaac Arevalo (Texas Tech). Schlageter won four straight on his way to the final, defeating Justin Braverman (Baylor), 7-6 (4), 6-1; Demetris Azoides (TTU), 6-4, 6-4; Ethan Muza (Baylor), 7-6 (3), 6-4; and Olle Wallin (TTU), 5-7, 6-1, 6-3.
"Justin picked up three more very good wins making it to the final of the singles competition at the Big 6 tournament," said Crowell. "He showed a lot of grit in the semifinal match, coming back from a set down to get into the championship match. Hist work this fall is paying off and can't wait to see him build on that this spring."
Mason Beiler and Jordan Hasson represented the Sooners a the ITA National Fall Championships in San Diego, Calif. Beiler defeated Taha Baadi of Wake Forest, 6-1, 3-6, 6-4, and Alafia Ayeni (Cornell), 2-6, 6-3, 6-2, before falling to No. 28 August Holmgren (USD) in the quarterfinals. Freshman Hasson picked up two wins in the consolation bracket.
"Mason once again had a strong tournament, reaching the quarterfinals of his second straight ITA National Fall Championship," Crowell said. "He picked up two more very quality wins on the way. Mason has had one of the most consistent fall seasons of any player in the country and will be ranked among the nation's elite players come the spring."
"Jordan was one of two freshman players who qualified for the ITA National Fall Championships, and picked up two more very solid wins in the event," Crowell said. "He continues to show a high level of maturity on the court and is picking up steam heading into the spring season. He will be the highest ranked freshman in the country when the rankings come out in a few weeks."
The Sooners will return to the court this spring. The team's schedule will be released at a later date.
