NORMAN – University of Oklahoma head track and field coach Tim Langford announced Monday the addition of Andrew Ninow (NIN-oh) to the Sooners coaching staff. Ninow will assume the title of associate head coach and work with the OU throws group.
"We are very excited to have Coach Ninow join our program," said Langford. "He brings with him a wealth of knowledge, experience and success that helps to move our program forward in every way. His track record of guiding throwers to national and international levels of success made him a clear choice for our throws position. Adding such an accomplished coach shows the administration's commitment to our track and field program's quest to be the best in the country, both on and off the competition surface."
A native of Sacramento, Calif., Ninow graduated from UCLA where he was a two-time Pac-10 and NCAA West Regional competitor. He joins the Sooners after a three-year coaching stint at the University of Washington.
"I am excited to be working under head coach Tim Langford," said Ninow. "He and his staff are dedicated to the development of their student-athletes, both on and off the track. I am thankful for the opportunity to take part in their vision for the future of OU Track and Field."
After graduating, Ninow remained at UCLA as an assistant throws and weights coach before accepting a coaching position at the University of San Francisco.
At USF, Ninow coached a javelin school record-holder and conference champion and led the men to score 32 points at their league championship. He then joined the Stanford staff, coaching the NCAA women's javelin runner-up in back-to-back years (two different student-athletes) and helped the Cardinal produce a school record and a third-place finish at the NCAA Championships.
After Stanford, Ninow moved to the University of Kentucky where he coached Andrew Evans to bronze in discus at the 2013 NCAA Championships and an NCAA all-time top-10 mark in 2014. Evans then went on to make the 2016 U.S. Olympic Team where he finished 16th in the Rio de Janeiro Games.
In 2014, Ninow was named the Southeast Region Assistant Coach of the Year by the USTFCCCA. He also served as the throws coach for the U.S. Men's National Team at the 2015 NACAC Championships.
In his most recent coaching position at Washington, Ninow proved his excellence by leading the Huskies to the most productive stretch for throwers in decades. Among his many accomplishments, he coached the men's throwers to the 2021 Pac-12 Championship (the only team to score in every throwing event) and the first Husky to score in shot put at the NCAA Outdoor Championships since 1996. Also under his watch, UW broke school records that stood for 75 years.
"The University itself, its rich tradition of athletic excellence and the passionate alumni and fan base all make this a special opportunity," said Ninow. "I look forward to building on the success of coaches Colin and Allison Boevers and what they have done here at OU."
During his time at Washington, Stanford and Kentucky, Ninow led athletes to the NCAA podium on 16 occasions, and qualified throwers to the national championships on a yearly basis.
"I am grateful for my time at the University of Washington under the leadership of Maurica and Andy Powell, and I'm proud of the exceptional throws program we have built there," said Ninow. "As my family and I transition into the Sooner Nation, I am excited to take on the associate head coach position within OU Track and Field."
Ninow will be joined by his wife, Kristen, also a UCLA graduate, and their children, Addison and Beau.
