NORMAN – Oklahoma (1-0, 0-0 Big 12) continues its home stand to start the year against UTSA (1-0, 0-0 C-USA) Friday, Nov. 12 at 7 p.m. at Lloyd Noble Center.

The Friday clash marks the fifth consecutive season the two teams will play each other. The Sooners earned a 105-66 victory in last season's contest. 

OU opened the Porter Moser era with a 77-59 victory over Northwestern State Tuesday, Nov. 9. With the victory against Northwestern State, the Sooners have won 18 consecutive season openers dating back to 2003-04.

Jalen Hill and Tanner Groves paced Oklahoma with 15 points each, while Groves tallied a team-high nine rebounds.

SERIES HISTORY

  • OU holds a 6-0 advantage over UTSA and a 4-0 record against the Roadrunners in Norman. The two teams will meet for the fifth consecutive season on Friday.
  • The Sooners opened the unusual non-conference slate last season with UTSA after games at UCF and against Florida were canceled. OU dominated the Roadrunners 105-66 Dec. 3, 2020. 
  • The win last season marked the third game in the series that the Sooners topped 100-plus points. OU opened the series with a 112-72 win (1983) and followed it up in the second series appearance with a 107-75 win (1995) in Norman.
  • UTSA head men's basketball coach Steve Henson served five years (2011-16) as an assistant coach under former OU head coach Lon Kruger. Henson also spent seven seasons with Kruger at UNLV (2004-11) and one season at Illinois (1999-2000). He also played for Kruger at Kansas State (1986-90).

LAST MEETING VS. UTSA

  • Brady Manek led the Sooners with 29 points and made a career-high eight 3-pointers. De'Vion Harmon (22), Trey Phipps (12) and Kur Kuath (10) also finished with double-figure points. 
  • The Sooners earned the season-opening victory last season after previous games against UCF and Florida were canceled. 
  • Oklahoma scored back-to-back halves with 50-plus points and its 54-point outburst was a season best. 
  • The 105-point performance marked the first time OU topped 105 points since Oklahoma beat Oklahoma State 109-89 Jan. 3, 2018. It was the fifth time in program history the Sooners scored exactly 105 points. 
  • Umoja Gibson, Jalen Hill and Blake Seacat are the only returners that appeared against the Roadrunners last season. Gibson earned the start and scored eight points. Hill appeared off the bench and added seven points and grabbed six boards.

LAST TIME OUT ...

  • Porter Moser earned his first victory in the Crimson and Cream Tuesday night at Lloyd Noble Center in his OU coaching debut. Moser netted his 294 NCAA Division I victory. 
  • The Sooners finished the night shooting 55.2% (32-58) from the floor and 64.5% (20-31) in the second half.
  • After scoring 28 points and holding a three-point edge at the half, OU stormed out of the gates in the second to take control of the contest. OU scored 49 points in the second half and were propelled by Jalen Hill, who tallied 12 of his career-high 15 points, in the second period. Tanner Groves provided a consistence energy for the Sooners, and matched Hill's team-best 15 points.
  • Groves led OU on the glass, wrangling a team-high nine rebounds, while Hill snagged eight boards. The duo were the only two Sooners to have 4-plus rebounds. 
  • Ten Sooners made their Oklahoma debut in the victory. T. Groves and Jordan Goldwire both started.

UP NEXT

  • Oklahoma competes in the Myrtle Beach Invitational for the first time in program history and opens play against East Carolina Nov. 18 at HTC Center in Conway, S.C. The Sooners are guaranteed three games at the tournament and face Old Dominon or Indiana State in the second round Nov. 19.
