Oklahoma Adds Two-Time ACC All-Defensive Team Selection B.J. Edwards

NORMAN — Head coach Porter Moser continued to reshape to the 2026-27 Oklahoma men's basketball roster with the signing of fifth-year transfer B.J. Edwards. The 6-3, 200-pound guard is coming off a career year at SMU where he was the only player in the NCAA to record three games with at least 20 points, five rebounds, five assists, and five steals.
"B.J. is a really good fit for our program, both from a culture and basketball standpoint," said Moser. "He's tough, he competes, he's got a high motor and he's been around winning. Those things matter to us. He fits how we want to play with his ability to push the tempo, make plays for his teammates, and play with or without the ball. He is also a two-time conference all-defensive team selection who will instantly help us with his ability to guard multiple positions on the floor. Most importantly, he's unselfish, he cares about winning and he's going to make the guys around him better. Those are the types of guys you want in your locker room."
Edwards averaged 12.7 points, 5.9 rebounds, 4.9 assists and an ACC-leading 2.3 steals in 28 games with the Mustangs last season before suffering a season-ending injury in late Feb. The Knoxville, Tenn., native shot .474 from the field (130-fo-274), .372 from three-point range (42-of-113) and .771 from the foul line (54-of-70). He was named All-ACC Honorable Mention and ACC All-Defensive Team in 2025-26, while also earning conference player of the week honors three times.
Edwards scored in double figures 19 times, including six games with 20 or more points scored last season. He recorded triple-doubles against Arkansas State (24 points, 13 assists, 10 steals) and Cal State Fullerton (21 points, 11 rebounds, 10 assists), while finishing the season with three double-digit assist games.
As a junior in 2024-25, Edwards set the Mustang program record with 83 steals and was named to the ACC All-Defensive Team. He ranks among the all-time career leaders at SMU for steals per game (1.9, t-3rd), steals (180, 5th), games started (93, t-12th), assists (364, 14th), assists per game (3.6, t-15th) and assist-to-turnover ratio (2.30, 6th) despite playing just three seasons on the Hilltop.
Edwards, who began his career by playing 14 games at Tennessee during the 2022-23 season, is averaging 7.6 points, 4.0 rebounds, 3.4 assists and 1.6 steals per game over 110 career games (93 starts). He shoots .458 from the field (312-of-681), .362 from three-point range (83-of-229), and .740 from the foul line (134-of-181). He has totaled 841 points, 440 rebounds, 370 assists and 181 steals with 83 three-point field goals across four seasons.
Edwards, who is listed in the top 10 of the On3 fifth-year transfer portal rankings, appeared in five games with the Sacramento Kings summer league team in July, averaging 2.4 points, 1.6 rebounds and 1.4 assists per game.
The Sooners have now added eight newcomers to a roster that includes returning double-figures scorers and preseason All-SEC candidates Xzayvier Brown (15.6 ppg, 3.2 rpg, 3.3 apg, 62 3FGs) and Derrion Reid (11.7 ppg, 4.4 rpg, .509 FG pct.).
The addition of Edwards gives Oklahoma one of the most talented and deepest backcourts in the country. The veteran trio of Edwards, Brown and Pop Isaacs has combined for 3,694 points, 1,145 rebounds, 1,050 assists, 426 steals and 496 three-point field goals in their respective careers.
Rising junior Dayton Forsythe (4.8 ppg., .356 three-point shooting in 59 career games) and consensus Top 75 freshman prospect Quincy Wadley are also poised to make an impact in the Sooners' backcourt during the 2026-27 season.
