Winans and Secor Shine in State Women's Opens

June 07, 2020 | Women's Golf

Oklahoma women's golfers Libby Winans and Ellen Secor both got back on the golf course this week as both student-athletes competed in separate summer events. They were joined by a host of former Sooners at both 54-hole tournaments.Ā

Winans, a product of Richardson, Texas, finished in a tie for 18th at 1-over at the Texas Women's Open. Her score of 216 was the third lowest among all amateurs playing in the event and was the low score from any current or former Sooner. She was exceptional on the front nine at Old American GC in The Colony, Texas, shooting +1 on those 27 holes for the event, the ninth lowest mark in the field.Ā

"I had so much fun competing again and just playing golf with other people." Winans said. "It felt really good to get back out there - I was really pumped!'

Former Sooners also made their presence felt in Texas this week. The Women's Open featured familiar faces in 2012 NCAA champion Chirapat Jao-Javanil, three-time All-Big 12 teamer Julienne Soo and Sydney Youngblood, whose career scoring average vs. par of +1.59 is the fifth best in school history.Ā

"It was awesome to see so many OU alums out there, too. Overall, I just had a blast competing and getting back into that kind of setting." Winans said.Ā

Out in Colorado, Ellen Secor shot a 3-over 219 at the Colorado Women's Open at Green Valley Ranch to finish as the second-low Am. After carding a 76 in round one, the OU senior fired a 71 and 72 over the final 36 holes to finish in a tie for 26th. Her 1-under 71 in round two was the best score of any amateur on Thursday.Ā

"It was great getting back into those normal feelings of a golf tournament." Secor said after her final round. "It's so much fun but it also really helps you figure out what you need to work on after. With all the time I've got now, I can hit the ground running and immediately work on those shots and nerves...The best part was having my dad on the bag. He's such a great caddie for me and I love having him out there with me!"

Secor was joined by former Sooners and current pros Kendall Dye and Ana Ruiz, who combined for over 40 top-20 finishes at Oklahoma.Ā

The week's events marked the start of the summer golf slate that current and former Sooners will tentatively play on through early August.Ā
