NORMAN – Junior
Martina Capurro has been named the ITA Central Region Player to Watch, the Intercollegiate Tennis Association announced Monday.
The Player to Watch award is given annually to the top returning player in the region.
"This is a nice recognition for Marti," said head coach
Audra Cohen. "She has worked very hard in her time at OU to improve her mentality and overall toughness, and this recognition shows that her work is paying off."
Capurro's junior campaign saw her a 15-11 combined spring and fall record. The Buenos Aires, Argentina, native led OU from the top spot in dual matches with a 6-4 singles record and achieved a season-high ranking of No. 64 nationally.
She recorded a 7-2 finish in dual match doubles alongside
Camila Romero, clinching five of OU's points as the Sooners went 11-0 in doubles points
During the fall, Capurro earned a bid to the 2019 Oracle ITA National Fall Championships after completing the fall season at 11-4 overall. Capurro racked up six wins over ranked opponents, including an upset of No. 13 Marta Gonzalez of Georgia at the ITA All-American.
Capurro also made a run through qualifying at the ITA All-American into the main draw and finished the tournament in the consolation quarterfinals. At the ITA Central Region Championships, Capurro powered her way to the singles and doubles semifinals.
This is the first ITA award for Capurro, who was a second team All-Big 12 selection in singles and doubles in 2019.
The Sooners finished the season at 8-3 overall before the season ended early due to COVID-19.
The national winners of the ITA awards will be announced next Monday during a special virtual awards ceremony.
