Sooners Close Day One of Tyson Invitational

NORMAN — The University of Oklahoma men's and women's track and field teams concluded day one of the Tyson Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark., with one victory and several personal bests. 

The Sooners' win of the day came from junior Essence Thomas. The two-time Big 12 Athlete of the Week secured the crown in the women's long jump, leaping 20-8.5 (6.31m). This was the Texas natives' third long-jump win on the season.

Freshman Mikeisha Welcome finished one spot behind Thomas, recording a jump of 20-2.25 (6.15m). Welcome's leap was good for a personal best, in addition to making her debut on OU's top-10 performance list, claiming the No. 8 spot. Sophomore Symone Washington joined the pair in the top-10, taking sixth place with a jump of 19-7.5 (5.98m). 

On the men's side of the long jump, junior Garry Williams set a personal best with a leap of 24-2.25 (7.37m), taking third place.  In the invitational portion of the event, junior Rayvon Allen jumped 24-7.25 (7.50m), finishing in seventh place. 

Junior Lauren Jones notched another impressive women's weight throw performance. Jones set a personal record, throwing 64-6 (19.66m), clinching a third-place finish. Her throw improved her standing on OU's top-10 performance list four spots, moving her from No. 6 to No. 2. 

On the track, sophomore Kennedy Blackmon took third place in the women's 400-meter dash, crossing the line at 55.265. Blackmon's time was good for a personal record. 

In the men's 60-meter hurdles, redshirt sophomore Isaiah Levingston and junior Williams advanced to the preliminary round of the event. Levingston finished prelims in 7.91, earning eighth place, while Williams finished in 8.33. Williams' time was a personal record, improving his previous one by one second. 

The Sooners advanced junior Camri Austin to the final round of the women's 60-meter hurdles. In the finals competition, Austin finished in 8.28, claiming sixth place. Sophomore Madison Langley-Walker joined Austin in the preliminary round, recording a time of 8.65. 

On the field, sophomore Bayley Campbell set a personal record in the men's weight throw, recording a 64-0.5 (19.52m) distance. Campbell was joined by junior Edward Jeans and freshman Diego Trevino in the top 10. Jeans threw 58-9.25 (17.91m), claiming seventh place, while Trevino recorded a 51-7 (15.72m) throw. 

Junior Ackeen Colley set a personal record in the men's 800-meter run, finishing in 1:49.09. The junior's finish was good for second place and moved him from ninth to sixth on OU's top-10 performance list. Redshirt freshman Joshua Dick followed in Colley's steps, notching a personal best time of 1:52.37.

Oklahoma advanced three athletes to the men's 60-meter dash finals. Senior Jackson Webb and junior Joseph Sheffield qualified for the preliminary round before the meet's start, while fellow junior Demarius Smith advanced to the finals from the qualifying round. In finals competition, the trio went back-to-back-to-back in the four, five, six spots. Smith claimed fourth place, crossing the line at 6.69 and setting a personal record. In addition, the junior moved up two spots on OU's top-10 performance list, staking a tie in the No. 7 spot.  Sheffield earned the fifth-place finish with his time of 6.70, while Webb earned sixth in 6.73. In the qualifying round, sophomore Quoi Ellis set a personal record with his 6.75 time. 

On the women's side of the event, junior Ja'Leesa Giles completed the preliminary round of the women's 60-meter dash in 7.66, while sophomore Nicole Ezeoke recorded a time of 7.68.
