NORMAN — University of Oklahoma track and field junior Essence Thomas was named the women's Big 12 Indoor Track and Field Athlete of the Week, the conference announced Wednesday.
The junior took home the J.D. Martin Invitational triple jump crown with a 13.29-meter mark, which was the second-highest jump in the nation last weekend. Her meet-winning mark was good for a personal record, in addition to breaking the J.D. Martin Invite triple jump record that was set in 2009.
Thomas currently holds the No. 12 spot on the USTFCCCA national rankings list for women's triple jump and fourth place in the Big 12.
The honor marks the second Big 12 Indoor TF Athlete of the Week recognition for Thomas in the past four weeks. She also claimed the award on Jan. 22 following her two-victory performance at the Vanderbilt Invitational.
