Sooners Open T&F Season at KSU

December 04, 2020 | Track and Field

NORMANĀ -Ā The Oklahoma track and field teams kick off their 2020-21 indoor campaign on Saturday at the Kansas State Winter Invitational in Manhattan, Kan.

The meet is scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m. CT with the field events before the track events get going at 1 p.m. The meet will be on a rolling schedule throughout Saturday. A total of 38 Sooners are slated to compete in the season opener.

"I expect that they will show us what we've worked on all fall," said OU head coach Tim Langford. "Besides them just being happy to be in competition again, I think they're focused on having success. For some of them, it'll be just knocking the rust off. For some that are coming out of high school or transferring in, they'll get a chance to see development under new coaches and a new system which is positive because it provides momentum and excitement.Ā

"For our returners, it's if they can pick up where they left off. I'll leave it in an open-ended question because for so many it's a different answer, but I think everyone has positive expectations for this weekend."

The Sooners return three student-athletes that qualified to the 2020 NCAA Indoor Championships in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Current sophomore Mikeisha Welcome, juniorĀ Kristo SimulaskĀ and seniorĀ Essence ThomasĀ were set to compete at nationals prior to the cancellation of the meet due to COVID-19.

Throughout the 2019-20 indoor season, three Sooners downed three indoor school records.Ā Mikeisha WelcomeĀ dropped the women's triple jump record at the first indoor meet of the season, leaping 43-9.75 (13.35m).Ā Essence ThomasĀ broke Welcome's record in the event later in the season, jumping 43-10.5 (13.37m) at the Tyson Invitational.Ā Kristo SimulaskĀ set the new school record in the men's heptathlon, claiming 5,691 points at the Big 12 Indoor Championships.Ā

At the 2020 Big 12 Indoor Championships, two Sooners walked away with individual conference titles. SeniorĀ Jackson WebbĀ claimed the men's 60-meter dash event after clocking in at 6.69.Ā Lavinja JurgensĀ earned the women's high jump title, clearing 5-11.5 (1.82m).Ā

Throughout the 2019-20 indoor season, the Sooners claimed a combined 49 event titles throughout the course of seven meets. Ā
