Thomas Earns Big 12 Athlete of the Week

NORMAN — University of Oklahoma track and field junior Essence Thomas was named the women's Big 12 Indoor Track and Field Athlete of the Week, the conference announced Wednesday afternoon.

The Galveston, Texas native collected two of the Sooners' seven victories at the Vanderbilt Invitational and recorded two personal bests. Thomas leaped 20-9 (6.32m) in the long jump, improving her previous personal record from 19-11.75 (6.09m).

On day two, the junior jumped 43-2.25 (13.16m) in the women's triple jump to notch her second victory of the meet. 

Thomas currently holds the fourth-place spot on the national rankings list for the women's triple jump, in addition to sixth place for the women's long jump.

The Sooner is the first Oklahoma track and field athlete to receive the Big 12 award for the indoor season.
