NORMAN — Oklahoma's No. 22 men's and No. 27 women'sĀ track and field teams concluded day one of the Vanderbilt Invitational in Nashville, Tenn.,Ā with four first-place finishes, the most of any program in competition Friday night. The invitationalĀ field consists of 17 men's and 18 women's programs, including five top-25 squads.

Redshirt sophomore Vernon Turner earned the Sooners' first win on the night in the men'sĀ high jump, clearing 7-1 (2.16m). It was Turner's first meet back with the Sooners, after the 2018 NCAA Indoor All-American sat out the 2019 season.Ā

Oklahoma's second win of the night came courtesyĀ Joseph Sheffield, who recordedĀ a 21.26 in the 200-meter dash. Junior Demarius Smith came in third place, clocking in at 21.46. The Sooners had back-to-back finishes in the ninth and 10th spots with Quoi Ellis and Xavier Brown, respectively. Ellis finished inĀ 21.86, while BrownĀ recordedĀ a time of 21.95.Ā

Junior Essence Thomas earned OU's third win ofĀ day one, recording a personal-best long jump of 20-9 (6.32m). TheĀ jump improved her place on OU's all-time top-10 list to No. 3, less than half-meterĀ behind the second spot. Sophomore Symone Washington finished in third place, leaping 20-3 (6.17m). Washington's top-three finish was good enough to move her to sixth on OU's all-time performanceĀ list. RedshirtĀ sophomore Nura Muhammad concluded the event with a 19-5.25 (5.92m) jump, good for a top-10 finish at eighth. Senior Amanda Van Buren leapedĀ 19-2.50 (5.85m), while fellow sophomore Madison Langley-Walker jumped 17-8.25 (5.39m).
