Track Announces Addition of Langford to Staff

August 13, 2019 | Track and Field

NORMAN – University of Oklahoma head track and field coach Jim VanHootegem and athletics director Joe Castiglione announced Tuesday the hiring of Tim Langford to the track and field coaching staff.
Langford joins the Sooners from South Carolina State where he served as the head coach of the Bulldogs cross country and track and field teams for six years. He will coach the men's sprints and hurdles groups at Oklahoma.

"Tim brings valuable head coaching experience to OU, including the things that go beyond the track," said VanHootegem. "He can help out a lot in those ways but mainly, the person that he is. The enthusiasm that he brings, the character and the way I think our student-athletes will respond to his leadership.

"Structurally, it's going to allow a lot more individualization to our athletes. We have had good success in the sprints and hurdles, but they were split amongst field-event coaches, so having a dedicated men's sprints and hurdles coach is going to really help give that group of athletes more attention. Particularly, with Tim, he's got a great record of talent development."

At SCSU, Langford helped the Bulldogs produce four NCAA indoor and outdoor All-Americans, 28 regional qualifiers and one NCAA indoor national champion in Tyrell Richard in the 400 meters in 2019. Additionally, he served as the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference track coaches' committee Vice Chair.

A 2000 graduate of Radford University, Langford brings valuable experience to Norman. A former student-athlete himself, Langford was an all-conference honoree for Radford in the high jump, triple jump, long jump and 4x100- and 4x400-meter relays, including a back-to-back Big South conference champion in the high jump in 1998-99.

"I'm extremely excited to be here," said Langford. "It's a phenomenal transition for me at this point in my career. Coach VanHootegem saw my body of work and thought that I might be able to help the institution and he thought it might be time for that step in my career and he took a chance on me. I'm grateful to him for that."

Following his successful collegiate career, Langford joined the coaching ranks and made stops at High Point University and Charleston Southern. As head men's track and field and cross country coach at Charleston Southern, Langford helped develop nine NCAA Championship qualifiers, three All-Americans and collected four Big South track Coach of the Year honors.

"I'm excited to work with the men's sprinters," continued Langford. "I think that with the group that I have, that I have been entrusted to, and the track record of my performance, I think that it is a really good fit for where I am in my career."
