Sooners Past and Present Excel at US, Canadian Championships

NORMAN – Current and former University of Oklahoma track and field athletes concluded an exceptional weekend of competition across North America this past weekend.

At the Toyota USATF Championships in Des Moines, Iowa, three former Sooners brought home top-10 finishes. In Montreal at the Canadian Track and Field Championships, two more OU alums and a current Sooner secured top-10 finishes, including one being crowned champion.

In Des Moines, 2018 graduate Jess Woodard recorded her highest USATF Championships finish of her career, taking sixth in the women's shot put. Woodard recorded a throw of 57-11 (17.65m) to secure sixth and her third consecutive outdoor shot put top-10 finish at the U.S. national championships.

On the track, 2013 OU alumni Riley Masters and Pat Casey put together solid races in their respective finals. Masters, running for NIKE, placed sixth in the men's 5,000 meters with a time of 13:31.39. A current Under Armour athlete, Casey advanced to his fourth USATF 1,500 meters final in the past six years, taking ninth in a time of 3:47.35.

Highlighting the former Sooner contingent at the 2019 Canadian Track and Field Championships, 2018 grad Leya Buchanan went 1-2 in the women's 200 and 100 meters finals. Buchanan, an Ontario native, clocked a 23.25 to win the 200 meters and ran an 11.28 100-meter dash to finish second.

Competing in her first Canadian championship, 2017 Oklahoma graduate Baileh Simms collected a runner-up finish in the women's long jump. Simms, fifth on OU's all-time top 10 list for women's long jump, leaped 20-7 (6.31m) to take second.

The only current Sooner to compete over the weekend, rising junior Falyn Reaugh placed eighth in the women's high jump at the Canadian championship. Reaugh, an indoor second team All-American in 2019, cleared the bar at 5-6.5 (1.69m) to secure herself a top-10 finish.
