Sooners Close Out Pair of Meets

NORMAN – The Oklahoma men's and women's track and field teams concluded a busy weekend of action late Friday night at the UCLA Bob Larsen Distance Carnival in Los Angeles and on Saturday at the 92nd Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays in Austin, Texas.

Two of the five Sooners competing in Los Angeles brought home event victories. Redshirt senior Sarah Scott won the women's invitational 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 10:19.51, while freshman Haley Herberg claimed the win in the women's 5,000-meter run invitational, crossing the line in 16:00.29. Herberg now owns the second-place spot on the all-time program performance list, falling short of the school record by just 0.59.

The other three Sooners running on the West Coast all collected personal bests. Sophomore Ackeen Colley finished fourth in the men's mile run with a time of 4:05.57, while freshman Luke George took seventh at 4:06.75. Redshirt junior Jacob Janzen also claimed a seventh-place finish, clocking a 30:52.79 in the men's 10,000-meter run.

At the annual Texas Relays in Austin, the fourth day of competition opened with a personal record from sophomore Falyn Reaugh in section A of the women's high jump. Reaugh cleared 5-9.75 (1.77m) to tie for fifth place by virtue of attempts. The mark moves her into a tie for eighth place on OU's all-time program marks list.

After earning qualifying preliminary times on Friday, the Sooners ran in both 4x100-meter relay finals and the women's 4x400-meter final. The Sooner women's team, made up of junior Amanda Van Buren, sophomores Dai'Lyn Merriweather and Ja'Leesa Giles and freshman Kennedy Blackmon, claimed third place in the 4x100 with a time of 44.58, while junior Jackson Webb, sophomore Joseph Sheffield, junior Xavier Brown and freshman Zac Martin earned sixth place in the men's relay with a time of 39.93. Blackmon, D. Merriweather and Giles teamed up with sophomore Jai'Lyn Merriweather in the women's 4x400 finals on their way to a time of 3:37.35 and a second-place finish.

After his PR 10.24 (3.0) in the men's 100-meter dash prelims on Friday, Sheffield matched his time with a 10.24 (2.9) for fourth place in the finals.

Redshirt junior and defending Big 12 Track and Field Female Athlete of the Week Meia Gordon competed in the A sections of the women's shot put and discus throw. Gordon continued her impressive shot put streak, winning her third title in as many meets this outdoor season with a PR throw of 54-9.25 (16.69m) on her last throw. The mark improved her fourth-place spot on OU's program record list. Sophomore Lauren Jones finished just ahead of Gordon in the discus throw at tenth with a mark of 160-4 (48.88m), while Gordon threw it 157-1 (47.88m) for eleventh.

Up next, the Sooners travel to College Station, Texas to compete at the Reveille Invitational on April 6 at E.B. Cushing Stadium on the campus of Texas A&M.
