Sooners in Fourth after Round One

NORMAN – Oklahoma women's golf team is in fourth place in a 15-team field at the Clover Cup in Mesa, AZ, after firing a 299 (+11) in Friday's opening round.
The Sooners are one shot out of scrims place, trailing Kentucky and Mississippi State who are tied for second place with a 298 (+10) at the par-72, 6,184-yard Longbow Golf Club.
The difficult course conditions played into the teams' performance. Only one team shot better than 10-over par. Southern California leads the tournament with a first round score of 292 (+4).
"It was the toughest I've ever seen this golf course play," said OU head coach Veronique Drouin-Luttrell. "We struggled on the front nine and turned it around big time on the back. We need to trust the process and stay patient. We are excited for the opportunity tomorrow."
Three Sooners are in the top-20 after the opening round. Sophomore Hannah Lee is tied for seventh after recording the lowest round for OU with a one-over, 73. Lee is one shot out of third place and six shots out of the lead.
Freshman Libby Winans fired a 74 (+2) to finished tied for 11th. Winans recorded four birdies on the day to stay in the top-15 after 18 holes.
Fellow freshman Mikhaela Fortuna was one shot behind Winans carding a 3-over, 73.
Sophomore Kaitlin Milligan posted a 5-over, 77. Senior Julienne Soo shot a 79 (+7) after finishing the back nine at even par.
Karen Arimoto, competing as an individual, is tied for 47th with a 79 (+7).
The Sooners tee off in Saturday's second round with a shotgun start at 10:50 a.m. CT. Oklahoma's golfers are grouped with Notre Dame and Kansas State.
