NORMAN — Oklahoma's track and field teams opened a three-meet weekend on Friday at the Tyson Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark., and the Iowa State Classic in Ames, Iowa.
The Sooners went up against top-notch fields at both events on their way to collecting a school record and numerous personal records.
Freshman Haley Herberg highlighted the day from Ames, breaking a 28-year-old school record and becoming the first Sooner to break 16 minutes in the women's 5,000-meter run. Her time of 15:58.44 launched her to the top of OU's all-time list, ahead of previous school record holder Monique Ecker, who ran 16:05.00 in 1991.
Earlier in the day at the Iowa State Classic, two other Sooners earned personal-best times of their own. In the men's 3,000-meter run, senior Jacob Janzen clocked an 8:17.88, while redshirt junior Zach Gentry finished in 8:27.76, both personal records. Junior Heath Warren finished between the duo, recording a time of 8:22.80. Redshirt senior Sarah Scott concluded the day in Iowa for the Sooners, running 9:33.88 for fifth place in the women's 3,000-meters.
At the Tyson Invitational, sophomore Camri Austin claimed her own personal-best mark of 8.28 in the qualifying round of the women's 60-meter hurdles. Junior Mahendra McWhite joined Austin in the preliminaries after clocking 8.59 in her qualifying heat. In the preliminary round, Austin and McWhite crossed the line in 8.29 and 8.79, respectively. Junior Bryce Douglas advanced to the preliminary heats on the men's side, tallying an 8.00-finish in his second race.
Freshman Symone Washington led the day for the Sooners in Fayetteville. Washington leapt on to OU's all-time top-10 program marks list in the women's long jump, recording a jump of 19-9.5 (6.03m). Her performance also earned her a second-place finish. The Sooners notched two more top-10 finishes in the men's long jump. Freshmen Langdon Williams and Golden Eke went 6-7, jumping 23-9 (7.24m) and 23-5.25 (7.14m), respectively.
Back on the track, sophomore Jai'Lyn Merriweather picked up a fourth-place finish in the women's 400-meter dash, completing the race in 54.80. In the men's 60-meter dash, junior Jackson Webb and sophomore Joseph Sheffield both advanced to the preliminary round. Webb finished his qualifying performance in 6.82 and improved to 6.79 in prelims, while Sheffield improved from 6.86 to 6.81.
In the women's weight throw, redshirt junior Camille Burge claimed sixth place with a toss of 57-9.5 (17.61m), while sophomore Lauren Jones came in just behind Burge at seventh, throwing 56-6 (17.22m). To close the day for the Sooners at the Tyson Invitational, sophomore Edward Jeans remained at fourth on OU's all-time top-10 men's weight throw list, but improved his mark to 57-8.25 (17.58m).
Competition resumes in Fayetteville at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, as four Sooners compete in the women's pole vault. The lone Sooner competing on Saturday in Ames, sophomore Ackeen Colley, takes the track at 3:45 p.m. to race in the men's 800 meters. At the UCO Alumni Classic, hosted by the University of Central Oklahoma at Mosier Indoor Faciltiy in Norman, Sooners begin competing at 11 a.m.
