December 04, 2019 | Softball

NORMAN — Oklahoma softball head coach Patty Gasso and Vice President and Director of Athletics Joe Castiglione announced Wednesday the eight-time defending Big 12 champions' 2020 schedule.

After playing 37 of their 52 regular season games away from home in 2019, the Sooners will play more than half of their regular season matchups inside the friendly confines of Marita Hynes Field in 2020.

OU will play 12 games against teams that reached the 2019 NCAA Tournament, including four Super Regional participants and three Women's College World Series qualifiers.

2020 will be the 26th season for Oklahoma under Gasso. In her quarter-century at the helm, the Sooners have reached the postseason every year, including 10 straight trips to the Super Regionals, 13 overall appearances in the WCWS and four national titles.

The season begins Feb. 6-8 at the Puerto Vallarta College Challenge in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. OU will be making its second appearance in the five-year history of the challenge, also playing south of the border in 2017. The Sooners will open the season with a matchup versus Nevada on Feb. 6, Long Beach State the following day and close the weekend with a double-header against George Washington and BYU on Feb. 8.

Following its trip to Mexico, OU will head to Tucson, Ariz., to compete in the Hillenbrand Invitational Feb. 14-16 at the University of Arizona. Highlighted by a matchup with fellow 2019 WCWS participant Arizona, the Sooners will play five games at Hillenbrand Stadium, also facing off versus Bryant, Long Beach State and two contests against Northern Iowa.

OU then makes its annual trip to the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic in Palm Springs, Calif., Feb. 21-23, where it will take on three teams that reached the 2019 NCAA Tournament. The Sooners will meet Nebraska and Texas A&M on Friday, Seattle and Washington on Saturday, and 2019 Norman Regional foe Wisconsin on Sunday.

The Sooners will play 12 of their 15 contests in March in Norman, starting with the home-opening Courtyard Marriott Tournament held Feb. 28-March 1 against 2019 Super Regional opponent Northwestern, Abilene Christian and North Texas.

After a midweek tilt with Wichita State on March 4, the Sooners will host their second tournament of the season, March 6-8, featuring Pac-12 member Utah.

Oklahoma will play its final regular season tournament March 13-15 in Norman, facing New Mexico State, Kent State and 2019 NCAA Tournament team Houston.

The Sooners will then travel to Denton, Texas, for a midweek matchup versus North Texas on March 18 before beginning Big 12 conference play.

The journey for a ninth-straight Big 12 title begins March 20-22 in Norman with a three-game series against Red River rival Texas. The Sooners will make their way to Ames, Iowa, for a series against Iowa State, March 27-29, and Waco, Texas, April 3-5 for a three-game matchup versus Baylor.

OU will play its final regular season non-conference series April 10-11 at Marita Hynes Field versus 2019 Super Regional squad Kentucky before traveling up I-35 for another mid-week tilt against Wichita State on April 14.

The Sooners will close the regular season with eight of their final 10 games in Norman, starting with a three-game series versus Kansas April 17-19. OU will make a quick trip to Arlington, Texas on April 22 to play UT-Arlington before returning home to host Texas Tech April 24-26.

The regular season will close with the Bedlam series April 29-May 2. The Sooners will host the Cowgirls in the first and third game of the series on Friday and Sunday and travel to Stillwater for the Saturday game.

Postseason play begins May 8-9 at ASA Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City with the Big 12 Tournament. The 2020 NCAA Regionals are scheduled for May 14-17 at campus sites, while the Super Regionals are scheduled to take place at campus sites from May 21-24. The 2020 Women's College World Series will be held in Oklahoma City from May 28 through June 3.
