NORMAN - The No. 21/22/22 Oklahoma Sooners (1-2 overall, 0-1 Big 12)Ā were defeated by No. 9/8/10 Oklahoma State (4-1 overall, 1-0 Big 12), 23-9, Sunday in their 2019-20 home openerĀ at McCasland Field House.Ā

Dom DemasĀ grabbed Oklahoma's first victory of the day, while
Justin Thomas (157) and
Anthony MantanonaĀ (174) alsoĀ earned three team points each for OU.Ā
Christian Moody opened the match for the Sooners at 125 pounds, dropping a major decision, 14-2, to Oklahoma State's No. 4 Nick Piccininni. No. 16
Anthony Madrigal was defeated in a close bout, 6-5, by Reece Witcraft, allowing OSU to jump to an early 7-0 lead.Ā
No. 3 DemasĀ started strong againstĀ OSU's Dusty HoneĀ with a pair of first-period takedowns, including his second, which was awarded after a Sooner challenge. The redshirt sophomore picked up another pair of points in the second to claim a 6-4 decision over Hone and secure the Sooners' first three points of the match.Ā
The win was Demas' 15th of the season, good for theĀ team lead.Ā
The Cowboys picked up their second major decision of the day with No. 4 Boo Lewallen'sĀ 12-4 victory over redshirt freshman
Jacob Butler.Ā
In the final match before intermission and with OU trailing 11-3, No. 19
Justin Thomas beat the clock withĀ a last-second takedown to end the second period and take a 4-2 lead. Thomas finished out the bout, winning 5-3, toĀ cut the Cowboys' lead to 11-6.Ā
As the teams left the mat for intermission, Oklahoma State was penalized one point, to bring the Sooners within four.Ā
Out of the break, OSU's No. 14 Travis Wittlake outlasted Sooner freshman
Sam Dover, 3-2. It was Dover's dual debut for Oklahoma, and only his fourth match of his collegiate career.Ā

At 174, Anthony Mantaona built an early 4-1 lead, butĀ OSU's Andrew ShomersĀ battled back toĀ take a 5-4 lead into the third period. MantanonaĀ tallied a two-point reversal to regain the lead, 6-5, before Shomers responded with his own to make it 7-6. After a stalling point was awarded to Shomers, MantanonaĀ tied it up at 8-8 with a takedown in the third period's final seconds.Ā
In sudden-victory overtime, Mantanona struck first, taking the bout, 10-8, and bringing the McCasland Field House crowd of 2,042 to life. The decision brought the Sooners within four team points, 13-9.Ā
"AnothonyĀ (Mantanona) is really talented," said OU head coach
Lou Rosselli. "I think that it was a big win for him. Just learning how to get through a match and overtime. He hasn't had to before...Ā Ā I think winning a tough match like that was definitely a good move for him."
The Cowboys took the rest of the dual's matches, scoring ten unanswered dual points.Ā
At 184, No. 24 Anthony MontalvoĀ picked up a 13-5 major decision over true freshman
Darrien Roberts.Ā In a top-10 matchup at 197, Oklahoma State's No. 6 Dakota Geer topped No. 9
Jake Woodley in a tight battle, 4-2. In the dual's final bout, Cowboy Austin Harris earned a 6-2 decision over Oklahoma's
Josiah Jones.Ā
